From @TamithaSkov on the Twitsite:

"Multiple investigators asking me whether the ongoing #PuertoRico power #blackout was #solarstorm related. At the present time I cannot exclude the possibility that geomagnetically induced currents (GICs) played a role. The power failure occurred within several hours of the storm peak at G4-levels yesterday.
That coupled with the fragility of the grid and the increased power consumption expected during the daytime hours (it was 12:40p local time), means the grid was stressed in multiple ways. Since transformer heating from GICs is a slow process, the several-hour delay from the peak storm intensity is consistent. This is a troubling development."

“Our message to Denmark is very simple: You have not done a good job by the people of Greenland,” Vance said. “You have underinvested in the people of Greenland, and you have underinvested in the security architecture of this incredible, beautiful landmass filled with incredible people. That has to change.”

I scoffed when I heard this on the news because how easily you could swap #Denmark for the United States and #Greenland for #PuertoRico. (Though from what I know Denmark has treated Greenland far better than the United States has treated Puerto Rico. And also, fuck the security/militarization shit.)

And now this.

"Nearly 60 percent of Puerto Rico’s more than 1.4 million utility customers remained without power on Thursday, the morning after a #blackout knocked all of the island’s functioning power plants offline and left the entire island in the dark.

Service was unlikely to be fully restored before the early hours of Friday, Josué Colón, Puerto Rico’s energy czar, said in a news conference early Thursday. That was how long it would take, he said, to get all the power plants back online after the systemwide shutdown."

“The upcoming April 19th protest is themed “Mourning America.”

We’re grieving the erosion of our rights, our freedoms, and our future.

We are asking all attendees to wear black clothing — a powerful symbol of collective mourning and resistance.

Throughout history, black has been worn in protest to show defiance, unity, and grief — from the women of Argentina’s Madres de Plaza de Mayo, to the Black Panthers, to modern-day movements for justice around the world.

We wear black because we mourn — but we also fight. Let our silence be loud. Let our presence be unforgettable."
