Wearing robes & adopting cultural trappings from another culture is #culturalmisappropriation & little more than #cosplay. It is not the practice of #Buddhism. Cultural trappings, robes, titles, etc., are not the #BuddhaDharma; these are #attachments & #hindrances to practice. Parading around in the robes & trappings of another culture is just LARPING — live-action role-playing. It mistakes the looks of the practice for the practice itself. #Mindfulness #ZenBuddhism… (1/4)
I strongly believe that the #BuddhaDharma & its practice should be shaped by the individual practicing it, not merely a cultural copy that has no bearing on the culture of the practitioner. Wearing the robes of another culture does little to prove that one has understood the core teachings of #Buddhism. The Indians, as the originators of #Buddhism, wore their cultural dress. (2/4)
"The #Buddhadharma is not far off. It’s as close as your mind. Reality is not somewhere outside. How can you find it, if you turn away from yourself? Whether you’re deluded or awake depends upon you. Make up your mind, and you will be there. Whether you’re in the light or in the dark doesn’t depend on others. Have faith and practice, and you will soon know the truth. If you don’t take the medicine of the Great Physician, when will you see the light of the sun?" - Ming k'uang, ca. 777 #HeartSutra
