A new strain of norovirus has been responsible for a dozen outbreaks on cruise ships, with hundreds of passengers getting sick. Meanwhile, last week, all full-time employees in the U.S. CDC's Vessel Sanitation Program were fired — cruise ship inspectors, plus the epidemiologist in charge of outbreak response. Pauline Frommer of @FrommersMag looks at why the heck this happened — "any claim that this was a cost-saving move is hokum," she writes — and what you should do if you're thinking of booking a cruise.

How to Turn an “#EconomicBlackout” Into an All-Out War on #CorporatePower

Friday’s economic boycott is a one-day attack on corporate interests. The #degrowth movement calls for a broader societal shift.

Jonah Valdez, February 28 2025

Excerpt: "Rooted in the work of American and European political theorists of the 1970s, the 'degrowth' movement criticizes a #capitalist system that seeks unending growth and profit, which has led to #ecological and #environmental ruin such as the impacts of #ClimateChange.

"Instead, it advocates for a system that prioritizes the needs of the #planet and its people, such as #housing, #education, and #healthcare. According to Jason Hickel, a leading advocate of degrowth and author of 'Less is More: How Degrowth Will Save the World,' the movement calls for reducing consumption and production of things that harm the planet such #FossilFuels, #SUVs, #PrivateJets, #mansions, #FastFashion, #IndustrialBeef, #CruiseShips, and the #MilitaryIndustrialComplex.

"While the term may be unfamiliar to many Americans, its core ideas have cropped up in the Green New Deal’s goals of a post-fossil fuel economy; the pandemic-era phenomenon of white-collar workers voluntarily quitting their jobs and working less; and the recent social media trend of '#NoBuy,' which encouraged people to purchase less and #repurpose more.

"'People are getting a sense that they’re ripped off, that they’re being taken advantage of and exploited as consumers,' said Aaron Vansintjan, co-author of 'The Future Is Degrowth: A Guide to a World Beyond Capitalism.' 'It is promising that people are responding to the current moment by showing their distrust of these corporations.'

"The boycott has drawn wide–ranging media coverage, along with the attention of some celebrities. It also caught the attention of #LindaSarsour, a progressive activist best known for organizing the 2017 #WomensMarch after #Trump’s first election.

"'It is an easy risk-free way to invite masses of people to act in reaction to the outrageousness of this Administration,' Sarsour told The Intercept in an email."

Here we go. Another novovirus rips through a Royal Caribbean cruise ship.

Affected passengers get to enjoy the world's dirtiest, most polluting form of travel, while contemplating the life-changing experience of projectile vomiting & extreme diarrhoea.

Nice.

We're not even halfway through February and this is the sixth gastrointestinal illness outbreak on a cruise ship in 2025.

Cruise ships are still floating petri dishes.

Today's Guardian briefing on #CruiseShips

* European cruise ships alone emitted more sulphurous oxides than 1bn cars in 2022, creating huge pollution in cities where they dock.

* Cruise ship CO2 emissions in Europe rose by 17% between 2017 & 2022, reaching the equivalent of 50,000 flights between Paris & New York.

* A single ship can emit as much diesel exhaust as 34,400 idling lorries to power operations while docked.

The Guardian · Monday briefing: What can be done to offset the environmental cost of cruise ships?By Archie Bland

This sounds like good news.

Customs and MPI are bringing in new border charges from December. For cruise passengers this will mean a rise from $11.50 to $21.50.

Naturally the cruise industry is throwing their toys out of the cot and threatening to visit our ports less often.

And that, if it happens, would be an excellent result.

The ODT has an excellent if lengthy piece on the cruise ship industry in times of climate crisis.

The Climate Change Commission is now consulting on whether emissions from international shipping & aviation should be included in NZ's carbon cutting goals out to 2050.
