U.S. consumer sentiment plummets to second-lowest level on records going back to 1952

“This decline was, like the last month’s, pervasive and unanimous across age, income, education, geographic region and political affiliation," said the University of Michigan's Joanne Hsu. "Sentiment has now lost more than 30% since December 2024 amid growing worries about trade war developments that have oscillated over the course of the year."

“But who will clean toilets if everyone gets UBI?

Maybe… the people who want to do it, at a fair wage? Maybe... the task will get automated?

Maybe the real question is: why do we accept that some jobs should be so miserable and underpaid that people only do them out of desperation?

#UBI forces us to value labor instead of exploiting it and it gives us the freedom to choose the jobs we take. ❤️

Thanks for posting the link!

I got a page asking me to confirm I was human. Then it went to a generic page (I might have done something wrong?) and I had to search for the item before I could submit a comment.

So for those who need it here's the title of proposed rule:

"Employment of Workers With Disabilities Under Section 14(c) of the Fair Labor Standards Act"

A search for "workers with disabilities" should find it

Disappointed by the 3.75% rise in minimum wage and awards, leaving wages barely above 2018 levels in real terms. For Australia's lowest-paid, this is another tough blow. We could have done better to address the cost of living and record corporate profits.

An increase of 5% could have restored real buying power to pre-pandemic levels without significantly impacting inflation. Check out the analysis from the Centre for Work at The Australia Institute: australiainstitute.org.au/post

Steadily increasing the minimum wage could pave the way for a universal basic income. Let's work towards a fairer, more inclusive society.

“If there was legislation to regulate tipping would you…?”

CBC: “While CBC Ottawa spoke to many people who were against tipping, they didn't want to admit that on camera — largely because they didn't want to sound cheap or be judged by friends and colleagues.”

(And don't be afraid to say you don't want to tip. It's OK! :))

CBCAs the holidays approach, Canadians say they're being tipped over the edge | CBC NewsAs Canadians shell out money for gifts and food and other festive purchases, some experts say we're recoiling from all those tip requests that come with an increasingly wide variety of debit or credit card purchases.

Implementation of the Indigenous Languages Act is critical to turning the tide on the continued loss of Indigenous languages in Canada, but that means money must be found to support community efforts to revitalize language, said the first ever Indigenous languages commissioner Ron E. Ignace.

And he says it requires an all-of-government approach, not in a silo under Canadian Heritage.

The craft of knitting Cowichan sweaters is handed down through the generations in First Nations families on Vancouver Island, BC.

Having to sell the sweaters at wholesale prices to shops that mark up the retail cost by hundreds of dollars has led to an initiative called Knit With Purpose to deal direct with buyers and give knitters a fair wage for their time and expertise.

The #ChicagoCityCouncil today voted to abolish the #TwoTier #wages system, which allowed employers to pay sub-minimum wage, on the expectation that workers would make up that difference from customers tips.

Beginning July 2024, the #SubMinimumWage will gradually increase over the next five years, until it is on par with #Illinois state's #MinimumWage of $15.80/hour.

NPR publishing anti-union propaganda from Steven Rattner, a multimillionaire who owns homes in Manhattan, Martha's Vineyard, and a horse farm in upstate NY. The same guy who bailed out the auto industry wants you to think the #UAW is greedy for wanting a 32 hour work week and cites low wages in MEXICO as a reason that their wage demands are "unrealistic." Fuck this guy. #UnionStrong #fairwages #workreform

Skyrocketing CEO Pay Is Fueling a Historic Auto Strike

youtube.com/watch?v=pMrR6jdhnK

The United Auto Workers strike is historic.
Not just because it's the first time in history the union is striking all Big 3 automakers – Ford, GM, and Stellantis – at once, but because they're fighting for the whole working class.

Workers are tired of generating massive profits, and getting so little. One union member stuck it to the CEOs: "Is your time really worth 300-400x more? Do you really work 300-400x times harder than we do? No, you don't.”

This #LaborDay, a day set aside as a national holiday in 1894, we commemorate the #laborunion movement, the demand for an eight-hour work day, better working conditions, #fairwages, and an end to #childlabor.
#Genderequality, #racialequality, fair #farmprices, and #farmworker rights are separate issues but all related to the struggle of the #unions for a fair wage and decent working conditions.

Hope for workers: New proposed rulemaking from the DOL would raise the threshold for salaried workers to be eligible for overtime to $55,000/yr. Big win for working people. The federal overtime provisions are contained in the FLSA. Unless exempt, employees covered by the Act must receive overtime pay for hours worked over 40 in a workweek at a rate not less than time & one-half their regular rates of pay. #FairWages dol.gov/agencies/whd/overtime
