Gonna do a mad bonkers experiment... shall create a new :firefox_nightly: profile with all my usual user.js, userContent.css, userChrome.css, & firefox-second-sidebar hardening & UX tweaks... but NO AddOns 😱😱😱. Wanna assess:
- potential speed increases
- potential non-AO workarounds for at least some of my essential AOs
- how potentially otherwise truly hideous being on the naked interwebz is

I expect i prolly shan't be able to tolerate the impending hideosity for more than 42'
😱😱😱

@neku @rachaelspooky Posting this from :floorp: #floorp12 beta 12.0.6. Still buggy, yet very usable. My fingers remain crossed for its future. I began using :floorp: when it was v9, 10, 11, ie, all based on #ESR. It was my daily default for several months last year, but ultimately i tired of its ESR base & returned to my longterm :firefox_nightly: #FirefoxNightly. Earlier this year, the moment i discovered the initial public beta of 12, i installed it on lappy & tower. On lappy it's my daily default, whereas on main pc tower Nightly remains default, at least until some of the more impactful bugs / omissions in 12 are solved.

Today from abc.net.au/news/2025-07-06/whe i learned for the first time of watch.brollie.com.au/, which i thought might be interesting to consider as a possible addition to my routine streaming on ABC iView & SBS OnDemand. I created a burner account, & was impressed by the fab array of Oz movies & shows.

Sadly, in neither my default FirefoxNightly, nor my backup Chromium, will anything actually stream. Each time, this error:

Somebody cut the wrong wire!
The player encountered the following error:

When i read watch.brollie.com.au/page/help/, i had a large sinking feeling...

General system requirements You can watch Brollie on PCs running Windows 7+, Intel-based Macs running macOS10.12+. You can also watch on Android tablets and phones, and iPhone and iPad using the app.

Wot? Wot wot wot? No penguins? Surely that can't be right? Are they flat-earthers?

If anyone happens to read this, in Oz, who'd like to do a bit of a test, could you pls try it with Linux & windoze, then post your outcome?

Typing this i wondered if maybe the error might be due to my VPN, rather than Linux. Once ABC 7pm News is over, i'll retest with the VPN off.

@cR0w @AAKL @9to5Mac Fair point. Without minimising the validity of your riposte, i was trying to engage a wider principle. Over the recent months so many tooters & bloggers & posters & journalists have made sweeping assessments of doom wrt #Firefox, which have alternatively amused & frustrated me. So many critiques have been unnuanced & histrionic, sometimes plain wrong. Meanwhile, each day i have continued using my #FirefoxNightly + #Sidebery + #FirefoxSecondSidebar, with my tweaked #userJS, & enjoying a magnificent browsing & tab-management UX. However, circling back to your final line...

many users likely wouldn't even know about that change

...also legitimately applies to my setup. I would wholeheartedly agree that :firefox: , :firefox_nightly: , Beta, DevEd would be better if Mozilla brought more granularity directly into the main GUI Settings, rather than leaving them buried for geeks. However, i prefer to "suggest" that enhancement, not [as so many armchair critics recently have felt wont] to rage & moan & declare the death of the fox.

My latest attempt to use a KDE Window Rule to fix the borked :firefox_nightly: icon in the Wayland -session panel of my main machine's :archlinux: :kde: :plasma: ... yet another abject failure, damnit.

This identical rule works well in my :fedora: :kde: :plasma: Wayland VM; without the rule, the panel icon is borked, with the rule, the icon is good. I've no idea why it does not also work in my #ArchLinux #Plasma... & given i've been fighting this for months [it used to work fine without a rule] i am now pretty pissed off.

@firefoxnightly & @kde -- any suggestions please?

Still happily using #Floorp12 Beta as my daily browser, but made an important change last night. As a longterm #TST, then later #Sidebery, user & lover, the last several months of me deliberately forcing myself to use my #FirefoxNightly then more recently Floorp12 Beta profiles predicated on the native FF #VerticalTabs & #TabGroups has been interesting, yet filled with frequent regret, so invested have i been for years in the power of managing all my tabs in a sophisticated tree hierarchy.

FF native tab groups atm remain merely single-level, like Chromium & Vivaldi, thus far less powerful than either TST or Sidebery. I know from bitter experience last year with Floorp10 & Floorp11 that Sidebery is incompatible [due to the Floorp #Workspaces; not only do Sidebery's tabs not recognise/respect Floorp's Workspaces, because both softwares seek to control tab location, they severely clash, causing major browser instability & often tab loss]. Hence i've made no attempt to court further/similar disasters by trying Sidebery in Floorp12. So, last night i created a new profile in Floorp12 for use with TST, & that's what i'm now using. Though in Nightly i regard Sidebery superior to TST, in Floorp the reverse is true; the Floorp Dev/s seem to have taken particular steps to ensure TST compatibility, which thus integrate really well with Floorp's native Workspaces.

The one decided drawback atm of using this new profile however is that with TST active & native tabs hidden, there is no instant access to the important tab context-menu items for splitting-tabs, & moving them to other Workspaces. Fortunately, both those operations i need to use only rarely, so my clunky workaround, which would be untenable if i needed to do it dozens of times each day, is bearable albeit still irritating. When the occasional need arises to do either of those operations, i temporarily unhide the native tabs at the UI top, perform the requisite right-click ops on the applicable tabs, then re-hide said native tabsbar.

I like my shiny shiny new, ergo i use & love using #ArchLinux, #KDE #Plasma, #FirefoxNightly, #Floorp12 Beta, et al. So it always amuses me each time i encounter the numerous reddit whiny whinges bitterly complaining about "new bloody unwanted stuff being shoved down my throat, & also get off my lawn!".

I suspect i need therapy [i mean, even more than i already knew]. Overnight i had a dream. It was vivid, it was detailed, & oddly i awoke still remembering it. It was not about unicorns, it was not about some rollicking space sci-fi adventure, it was not about having unlimited supplies of turkish-delight & violet-crumble. It was not even some lurid sexual fantasy. Nope. It was... that today's update of #FirefoxNightly introduced infinitely-nested #TabGroups, rather than uni-dimensional as now.

The saddest part... this toot is actually for-real. It's not just made-up nonsense. I really had that dream. 🙄🤦‍♀️

I wonder if there's any hope for me, or if i'm now unfixable? 🤷‍♀️

A couple of months ago my #FirefoxNightly, whose taskbar icon has reliably been the correct :firefox_nightly: for years, abruptly devolved to the hated generic ugly #Wayland icon. I've waited patiently for the Nightly Devs to fix whatever they broke, but 🦗🦗🦗. Every now & then in a fit of pique i re-search online for the latest "workaround" advocated by KDE Plasma Devs, in lieu of Nightly Devs coming good, but it's always the same bullshit about creating a custom window rule, which simply Does Not Work. Gaaaah.

In recent days, for... reasons...i chose to create a new Profile in my :firefox_nightly: #FirefoxNightly. The default theme colour given it by the new-paradigm #ProfileManager was a dark blue that demoralised me, so i looked for alternatives, then stumbled across #DarkNeonGradient by @iHadNever. It is simply sumptuous, & greatly delights me. Lovely work, iHadNever ! 💜

Continued thread

@MsDropbear42 Over the past 24ish hrs, with a little sleep, i grasped the nettle & created 5 new Profiles in the new #ProfileManager, to match my old ones in the old / becoming superseded #AboutProfiles about:profiles paradigm. Given the :firefox_nightly: Devs' ongoing silence about any tool to efficiently migrate from the old to the new, i had to do this entirely manually, & with copious trial & error. Eventually i fathomed a workable albeit extremely tedious procedure to do it. In my older toot i'd said

i then attempted to copy each of the old profiles' folders & files into the respective new ones. That was hopeless, as clearly it overwrote whatever parameters are buried somewhere in each respective new-paradigm profile folders that tells them they are of the new paradigm, thus buggering it all up

Unfortunately it seems to be the prefs.js file which ruins the conversion, so i learned to exclude that file from the myriad i copied between the old & new schemas. The rotten thing about having to exclude that file is doing so then necessitates hours of work having to manually recreate all the arcane settings per profile, including the applicable AddOns & their respective settings / user data.

The new paradigm barely uses the traditional files installs.ini & profiles.ini, so part of the delight of this manual procedure is to discover the match-up between my plain-english profile names, & the random character names assigned by the new Profile Manager in the new subdirectory Profile Groups, in order to ensure i'm copying files into the correct target new-profile directories...

    R4YSqWk8.Profile 1 = Nightly_Native
oSnWoXoN.Profile 2 = Nightly_Sidebery
iPYqTOrf.Profile 3 = Nightly_Session-Wipe
G09d26gj.Profile 4 = Nightly_Streaming
3E44GKFE.Profile 5 = Nightly_Virgin

Still, after all the effort, i do grudgingly admit the fleshed-out P/M does look modestly aesthetic...
