@mayloo89 I have been using #xmpp starting from primordial times of ca. year 2005. In that times there were some reasons why it was attractive, some of them are still relevant. Disregard the age and the advent of the epoch of the walled gardens, the protocol has quite evolved to meet modern expectations, and I am quite optimistic.

#Matrix - I guess I have even looked on it a bit, but never moved in seriously. I've heard mixed opinions and felt it a little bit like a tryout to reinvent the wheel. Heavy clients, again...

I am interested not only in communication but also in possibilities of sending notifications from scripts, which immediately disqualifies a lot of modern chat software.

A potential substitute of #xmpp, in my opinion, could be rather not matrix, but serverless systems like #jami . The first attempt was made by #tox, but it seems to be failed. #Jami looks much more promising.
