I know why the Brain DJ has picked this obscure track, I just don't know how the Brain DJ found it under cobwebs and red herrings –
Julian Cope, "Sunspots" (1984)
And probably one of the weirdest LP covers, bordering on "heta uma" ("bad but good") …

There are a few folks on FB who post billboard charts from the 80s. The top modern rock tracks from this week in 1989 were pretty great so I made a playlist. I'll be skipping Little Miss S. by Edie Brickell because I still don't like it, but the rest? Dang...

In Ancient Times... for this weeks blog post we take a look at standing stones and ancient sites in cover art, featuring a #topnine of some of the best examples.

The prompt is Underground
Julian Cope, "My Nation Underground" 1988
In the burgeoning #PostPunk music scene in late #70s #Liverpool, nascent songsmiths #JulianCope and #IanMcCulloch penned “Books” (aka “Read It in Books”), then went on to found #TeardropExplodes and #EchoAndTheBunnymen respectively, each group recording and releasing their version of that song.
The Bunnymen would prove to have better legs, producing 5 albums of original material with their initial lineup. After two albums, Teardrop disbanded and Cope began his restless ongoing solo career.
My Nation Underground, Cope’s fourth solo album, has a distinctly #80s sheen, in a satisfying, bracing way. The track "Charlotte Ann" crackled out of the speakers from the widening radio palette of the time like a march, and the title track "My Nation Underground," a funky call to arms.

I had to walk some blues off, and found myself at the Valley of Rocks on a windy day. The rocks are Devonian, full of fossils from deep time; as Julian Cope would say, its magic is deep & severe. Wild goats were on top of the outcrops, giving the whole scene a perfect folk-horror vibe.
You can see the silhouette of the biggest goat on the cliff in pic 1. Very Dennis Wheatley/Rodney Matthews.

Just had a little bit of insight into why I was such an angry guy when I became an atheist - and why I think a lot of Christians are angry these days: grief.

#30DaySongChallenge Day 8: A song about drugs or alcohol.
Ten or eleven years ago, I trained up to run a half marathon. I had one of those little square iPods that I loaded up with banging tunes, but set it to random play. I was way too close to the front of the pack when the starting gun went off and I clicked play on this song. I couldn't keep up the pace even for 3 1/2 minutes... https://youtu.be/y0LoATTcoJs

Just not quite sure what to make as yet. I'll decide when I make it to the kitchen!
I have posted this before, and I shall post it again, because I like it and I just can't control myself –

80s Julian was a little wiggy, but artistically he's at the top of his game here. Brilliant track from his Teardrop's masterpiece, Wilder.

#HappyNewYear! I only arrived here on Mastodon in Nov, part of the great #twittermigration. In that short time, I have connected with so many decent, interesting, bright & lovely people. Thx!
My husb & I met nearly 20yrs ago thru an interest in #Neolithic #AncientMonuments & #JulianCope's #TheModernAntiquarian, so for #StandingStoneSunday I'd like to share a #painting I made of the avenue at #Callanish.
