U.S. #Mafia boss of bosses Giuseppe "Joe the Boss" #Masseria was murdered #OTD in 1931. He was shot to death in a back room at Gerardo Scarpato's Nuova Villa Tammaro restaurant, 2715 West Fifteenth Street, #ConeyIsland.

An early morning raid by Dade County, #Florida, deputies on February 28, 1930, resulted in the arrests of visiting racketeers engaged in gambling. Among those taken into custody were Salvatore "Charlie #Luciano" Lucania and reigning #Mafia boss of bosses Giuseppe "Joe the Boss" #Masseria.
A crime historian recently noted that Lucania ally Benjamin "Bugsy" #Siegel, using the alias Harry Rosen, was also arrested at the event.

Salvatore #Maranzano, #Mafia leader from #Sicily, passed through #NiagaraFallsNY on February 5, 1926, on the way to a farm he had purchased in Saltfleet Township, Ontario, #Canada.

Maranzano soon relocated to New York City. In a few years, he led a bloody rebellion against Mafia boss of bosses Giuseppe #Masseria. Following Masseria's assassination by his own lieutenants in spring 1931, Maranzano took for himself the position of boss of bosses.

Maranzano was assassinated in New York City on September 10, 1931.

Joseph Catania, widely known as "Joe Baker," was shot and fatally wounded on a #Bronx street #OTD (Feb. 3) in 1931. He died of his wounds the following morning at Fordham Hospital.
The shooting occurred at the height of the #Mafia #CastellammareseWar. Catania, a nephew of Ciro "Artichoke King" Terranova, was an important member of the underworld faction led by Giuseppe "Joe the Boss" #Masseria. His assassins worked for Masseria rival Salvatore #Maranzano. Joseph #Valachi later admitted to being part of the team assembled by Maranzano.
