Last week, Quartz, the finance publication co-founded by Zach Seward in 2012, was sold by G/O Media to a Canadian software company. All the editorial staff were fired. In a blogpost, Seward writes about Quartz's journey from thriving enterprise to "zombie brand." It's a story that has been repeated across journalism for years now, but Seward sees some hope in the ascendant non-profit media scene. "The media business often feels like a battle between idealists and cynics," he writes. "Most of my favorite news startups of the current era have chosen the non-profit path, which has its own major challenges, but at least cynicism is not one of them."

Until folks start flipping tables, nothing is going to truly change in museums, non-profits, and the research and evaluation field.

It sucks, but maybe all these cuts to IMLS, NSF, NEA, NEH, and everything else force people to act, to take a principled stand.

—contributes to the greater good in ways that cannot always be measured by metrics. Much like training to improve in sports, volunteering is a practice that shapes not only the lives of those we help but also ourselves. Becoming a humanitarian is a journey, and I promise it will reward you with new insights, connections, and a profound sense of purpose.

#CriminalizingDissent: #Greenpeace Ordered to Pay $667M to #DakotaAccessPipeline Firm over #Protests

#DemocracyNow, March 20, 2025

"A jury in #NorthDakota has ordered Greenpeace to pay more than $660 million in damages for defaming #EnergyTransferPartners, the corporation behind the Dakota Access Pipeline. The Texas-based pipeline company accused Greenpeace of orchestrating criminal behavior by training and providing funds to the #Indigenous-led protests at #StandingRock. Greenpeace and its supporters, including other #nonprofits and #advocacy groups, argued that the lawsuit is part of a conspicuous attempt by #corporations to destroy the right to #FreeSpeech. Longtime #HumanRights and #environmental lawyer #StevenDonziger, who was part of the independent trial monitoring team observing the trial, says it was purposely held in a region of the country with deep ties to the #FossilFuel industry. Donziger said most of the jurors in the case were connected to the industry and were 'predisposed' to rule in favor of Energy Transfer despite the 'false narratives' presented at the trial. Greenpeace plans to appeal the ruling."

"A 30-day funding freeze enacted by the #Trump administration at #FEMA, the Federal Emergency Management Agency, has caused an immediate pause to the millions of dollars distributed to help vulnerable #nonprofits, including many #Jewish institutions, meet their #security needs.

#Synagogues, Jewish day schools and other organizations that rely on the FEMA funding dispersed through the Nonprofit Security Grant Program have not received reimbursements allocated to them, according to representatives from the Secure Community Network, an organization that provides security services to Jewish nonprofits."

📣 #Hunger Doesn't Take Days Off!

➡️ With federal funding cuts affecting food banks and vital food programs, it's crucial to understand that food insecurity doesn't discriminate. Even those not living in #poverty can struggle to put food on the table.

📌#Nonprofits can't do this work alone. They depend on the support of #community partners, donors, and #volunteers. Every act of kindness makes a difference!

📲If you're struggling, find your local #food bank here: feedingamerica.org/find-your-l

I am a proud supporter of #nonprofits that…
-provide food to families
-help house the homeless
-respond to domestic violence
-rescue abandoned pets
-protect wildlife
-provide childhood education
-celebrate the arts
-conserve the enviroment
-protect civil liberties
-fight discrimination
-rebuild after disasters
And more.

The nonprofit sector is a vital part of our society.

…On top of seeking the elimination of #DEI & “#environmental #justice” teams throughout the federal government, the #Trump EOs also directed agency heads to draw up lists of publicly traded #companies, #universities & #nonprofits to potentially *investigate* over certain DEI practices. The orders also conditioned government contracts & grants on companies & organizations certifying that they don’t engage in DEI practices that may violate non-#discrimination laws.

Many nonprofits rely heavily on federal grants and AmeriCorps members. These nonprofits are being told that they need to scrub anything mentioning diversity, equity, and inclusion if they expect any federal funding or assistance moving forward. (Attached are a couple of examples from a literacy nonprofit called Reading Partners). It's possible that many of Trump's executive orders will be defeated in court, but--even if that happens--the legal process can be slow. Funding is being pulled from programs / nonprofits / research that cannot survive long without it. So, if you see an organization complying with these orders, please do not immediately think less of them. Do not assume they are making these changes because they want to. In most cases they are simply trying to weather the storm and survive long enough to continue helping the communities that depend on their services.

"Project 2025 is not a scattershot effort. Though some Trump appointees lack experience and familiarity with bureaucracies, #Project2025 distinguishes between executive orders, agency regulations, policy guidance, personnel reorganization, and congressional action—fueled by insider knowledge. It is a clear blueprint to dismantle or repurpose federal agencies and alter their priorities..." nonprofitquarterly.org/how-sta #Nonprofits #NGO
