Hello hachyderm.io! I have moved to this server from a much smaller one at bigshoulders.city. I'm hoping that I'll meet some new people here that share my interests and hobbies.

I have a passion for making new technology useful, biking and a bunch of other stuff. Currently living in #Cork #Ireland on a work assignment, but I'll always be a #Chicagoan at heart

One thing I keep realizing is, in my old job we kept focusing and focusing the value of the product, with the goal of being the dominate tool in that market; however, the overall long term revenue kept going down. If I look at the competitors, they kept adding more and more capabilities to get a broader and broader market. Can you guess which business tends to do more layoffs? #business #marketAnalysis #productManager

+ wore teddy bear snood (scarf hoodie) today: people smiled at me along the way, prolly coz i walked so fast like an ewok wearing a tan-coloured trench coat and matching infinity scarf, LOL

+ co-worked with friends then went for tea after at my fave cake place; we talked about AI, robotics, existentialism, marketing, design, and business economics for 2 hours

+ post gym tonight, fam got us some lemongrass grilled Vietnamese pork and chicken vermicelli plate and house special beef pho for dinner (so good, ate much so I'll be fasting today)

+ friend returned from Shanghai, China, gifted me a box of Terraform Coffee grown in Kenya: that's a dozen foil packets of pour overs!

Tried it now at 2am after power napping and it's so good! It's the best pour over I've ever had! It tastes like berries, dark chocolate, and wine mixed together. The smell, it's divine!

Great product manager job!! YNAB is hiring

A rare SaaS company that hasn’t taken funding and that is going well and seems to have a good work culture (they are a beloved personal finance app that personal finance geeks love)

Fred Brooks' Mythical Man Month famously coined that `adding new people to an already late #softwaredevelopment project will only make that project later`. Hard to see in college first read, but I've seen in every single job since.

Call me old-fashioned, but if you're a new hire, let alone the #productmanager, team lead or sw. manager, it behooves you to actually read the (comprehensive & excellent) #product #documentation.

Lest you slow the team down by asking stupid fucking questions.

So as a #ProductManager I find the review fascinating.

- What usability studies did they do?
- What UX research did they do?
- What personas did they develop for?

It strikes me as the output of something where usability & UX testing is not conducted broadly enough, or if it was, the results listened to.

First generation products can be limited in what they do, so long as they conform to two essential rules:

- They don't make the user feel tricked that they should be doing more
- What they do, they do really well.

If you Gen1 product can do both of those things, it doesn't matter if the price tag is higher -- particularly if it's trying to present a new paradigm. New market segment? Write your own price book (within reason).

This review was 100% engineered by #Humane. And no, I'm not dissing Marques, quite the opposite: Humane engineered exactly that sort of review by failing at some exceedingly fundamental aspects of usability and product development.

Deal with it!?

Are you a #DepartmentHead transitioning into one of those "new" #agile shared-leadership roles like e.g. #ProductManager or #SystemArchitect?

Too often you still feel that you really should wing it all? 🤯
You've been used to make those crucial product decisions, push implementation forward, care about technical quality and support the teams?

✨ You don’t have to do it all alone! ✨

Last fall I dropped the ball as a #ProductManager. It was a hard time and a ton was out my control: our group was overcapacity, we'd just lost some friends to layoffs, and our biggest clients were first-time founders eager to skip testing and release ASAP. 💀

My mistake? Not organizing a team retro when things calmed down.

Our team still grumbles about that time, a signal we never properly addressed these old wounds. I'm finally setting up one now, a much-needed step to heal and move forward.
