@Brad_Rosenheim
I can't even imagine what replacing all of #IncomeTax with a national #SalesTax will do to #inflation!!
In quebec the sales tax is 14.975%. On a total puchase of $2737.00, one expects $409.87 in tax for a total of $3146.87.
I'll wait why you verify my math.
Still with me? Am I correct?
Great, Apple Store dinged me for an extra penny. No big deal, except, if they do this to everyone, it adds up.
(Technically, in Quebec, we have 5% Federal tax and 9.975% Provinial tax, which still totals $3146.87).
Another post on my current issue with operating an #Etsy store in #Canada.
I want to explain exactly what the issue is, and see if any #Canadian #sellers know how to deal with this problem.
1. If you hit a certain sales threshold, Etsy demands you add your "taxpayer ID" to your account. This is your GST registration number, usually.
2. Once you add this to your account, Etsy stops collecting all sales taxes on purchases in Canada *except* the provincial sales tax from B.C., Manitoba, and Saskatchewan. It doesn't add GST or HST to sales. They tell you to submit it yourself from the sale proceeds.
3. Etsy provides no way to set #prices differently for different #provinces. Tax rates vary across Canada, from 5% GST in Alberta and the territories, to 15% HST in the maritime provinces.
4. So you have to pick a price that will allow you to take ~15% off each sale to remit as #taxes without losing money on each sale - but this higher price will be higher than it needs to be for provinces with lower tax rates, and even worse will have PST added on top for 3 provinces, jacking the price up even higher.
I ran into this over a year ago, and managed to convince them to take my GST ID off my account (they generally refuse to do this) so they collected the tax again, but they're now demanding I re-add it, which will trigger the above problem again.
Any other Etsy sellers in Canada know how to deal with this problem? Boosts appreciated.
Do you really think that renters don't pay #PropertyTax? Do you think store owners pay #SalesTax? How benighted would you have to be about how #money works that you would think #landlords are the ones paying #mortgages and #taxes?
If you want a #LivingWage, the answer is controlling the #CostOfLiving, not raising the #MinimumWage. Any economist can tell you that prevailing market prices are a function of money supply. More money in circulation raises prices.
#California wants to end #Cupertino's #tax deal with #Apple
Of Apple's 7.25% sales tax, the local 1% portion goes to the city. Then under the same deal, Cupertino actually returns approximately one third of this revenue to Apple.
Consequently the benefit to Apple is clear, but also Cupertino profits because it sees significantly greater #salestax revenue than it otherwise might.

International sales tax advice needed!
I have a tip jar for my accounts and websites ( @feditips, https://fedi.tips etc) which I mainly use to cover their costs. One of them is through ko-fi, the other is through liberapay. **Income tax is not an issue, I declare what I get to my country's government as part of my tax return.**
The problem I have is that my payment processor is now informing me I might (or might not) have to keep track of sales tax on donations:
-I'm not selling anything, there are no perks for donors. The services will happen regardless of whether anyone tips me.
-It would be incredibly complicated, it would mean registering with dozens of different countries.
-The total donations from each country are tiny, usually a few euros per year. The largest one is a few hundred per year.
-I'm not earning enough to have an accountant.
-I can't find any advice on this situation!
Can anyone help?
