Anybody used #SiYuan?
I'm getting that personal documentation system itch again. I need to write more things down, and I'm ready to cave on hardcopy for things that are truly ephemeral, but which I want to more richly index.

@techhelpkb After a decade+ of being all-in on Onenote I'm about 80% off now, and growing more so by the month.
My sanctuary of choice is #triliumnext, but there are others such as #notion, #obsidian, #logseq, #joplin, #siyuan
Onenote is a good product if it fits you, especially with an addon like #onemoreaddin for onenote desktop, but if it's cramped, don't wait to move. In MS eyes it's mostly done, what's there now is what you get.

Tested the fourth PKM: #SiYuan (https://b3log.org/siyuan/), which is pretty similar to Anytype feature-wise.
It's also a product that starts off with saying that it's "privacy-first", supported by what might be the world's shortest privacy policy, which clearly states: "Does not collect user personal information and usage data."
Unfortunately, the Google Analytics and Google Tag Manager scripts that are loaded on start are nowhere mentioned. No warning, no consent question, on by default.

@TobiasPaur An mir scrollte gerade #SiYuan in @fdroidorg vorbei ... könnte das passen?
@weaselshit #Siyuan Cons:
- Very small user base in the languages I can read/understand
- No stream of journal entries like Logseq
- Almost too many icons? Too many separate menu items?
- Some odd UX choices (esp media embeds), and jumpy popups when hovering to the left of blocks
- I kind of miss being able to go into edit mode by selecting a block in Logseq. This app is very much WYSIWYG

@weaselshit So far, I've narrowed down my wish list to the following: https://vis.social/@candide/112136340101035491
Currently testing:
#Siyuan (https://b3log.org/siyuan/en/) Pros:
+ Impressive feature set
+ Nice interface, for the most part
+ Good outliner + long-form hybridity
+ Block embeds are some of the best I've seen
+ Panels, tabs, modular windows, doc trees, page outlines
+ Can create columns of content like Notion
+ Inline text formatting toolbar

@randomgeek I tested it a monthago, problems with sync and lost some information.
Now with #siyuan and happy with it.
@spinningthoughts I looked at #SiYuan a while back, but not lately. I’m interested to see where they go with the app!
@markmcelroy One new challenger I also see appearing in the backmirror is #SiYuan. Local-first and various sync solutions. They‘ve just started rolling out their database model and it allows giving any single block propeties… and simultanous membership in multiple databases. The UX is still very limited, but SiYuan could overtake Anytype and Capacities and become more Tana-like while having long-form writing capabilities and plugins, all under a GNU liscence. Potent mixture.
The ability of #Logseq and #Obsidian and #SiYuan to suggest "unlinked mentions" or similar without us asking for it explicitly is one of their little superpowers and I feel like we should expand on that.
Yes that may require metadata that a plain text file is not equipped to deal with. But I see that as a challenge, first of all. Not an obstacle.
@randomgeek ha ha I thought you already settled with #Logseq. Anyway, do you have pointers/tutorials/guides to help set up sync for #SiYuan? Is it doable for noobs? What's the cost for syncing?

Been getting deeper into SiYuan Note lately. It’s neat, and offers synchronization through Amazon S3 or any compatible service. Compatible? Well heck. Didn’t know that there’s something out there S3 enough without being S3.
Using Digital Ocean Spaces for the last month or two. Now I want to try self-hosted. Hopefully I can set up Garage on my Raspberry Pi 4.
Oh nice. #SiYuan sync includes session stuff. Laptop gets same tabs open as I had on desktop.
Yay it worked! I got #SiYuan sync between macOS and Windows installations via a Digital Ocean Space.
