#UniversityOfToronto hires three prominent Yale #professors worried about Trump

#Fascism scholar #JasonStanley and #historians #TimothySnyder and #MarciShore have taken jobs at the University of Toronto amid concerns about the second #Trump administration

by Allison Smith, Mar 26, 2025

"U.S. President Donald Trump’s reelection has spurred several high-profile Yale #professors to leave New Haven for jobs at the University of Toronto.

"Bestselling author Timothy Snyder and historian Marci Shore are on leave from Yale and joined UofT earlier this year.

"Snyder and Shore, who are married, will begin teaching courses at the Munk School of Global Affairs & Public Policy this fall.

"Shore told TorontoToday they plan to stay at UofT 'for the long-term.'

"Snyder is the New York Times bestselling author of #OnTyranny and The Road to #Unfreedom, and an outspoken critic of the #Trump administration.

"UofT began recruiting her and Snyder two years ago, Shore said, 'and we were seriously considering the offers long before the November 2024 presidential elections.'

"'Both Toronto and the Munk School were and are very attractive places unto themselves, even bracketing the American descent into fascism,' she said in an email.

"'All that said, yes, of course our #AmericanCatastrophe played a role in our final decision.'"

Cory Doctorow's (@pluralistic) blog post for today is a speech he gave last night at the University of Toronto, the annual Ursula Franklin Lecture at Innis College.

It's worth reading:

It connects the dots between anti-circumvention copyright laws like the USA's Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) (and the Canadian copycat legislation) and the enshittification that ensues when Big Tech does ... well, practically anything. There's a specific example he uses that is horrifying. He also shows exactly how Big Tech has escaped what he identifies as the usual four factors for keeping the worst instincts of companies in check.

I agree with him that we should annul the anti-circumvention law on the books, and would go further in saying that we should explicitly enshrine in law the rights to alter, repair, remove etc. any functionality of products and services that we choose to use. I was one of the original 6,000 Canadians who submitted comments warning against the implementation of these restrictions to our government at the time, and my feelings in support of this are stronger than ever.

Give it a read.

The zionist also asked a Black woman at the gates if her ancestors were originally from Canada. Why do all these crazy zionists have that weird smile on their face as they threaten and insult people, and why are Toronto cops so gentle with them? Of course not a peep from Mayor Olivia Chow, or Premier Doug 'it's the immigrants' Ford, or PM Justin Trudeau. No surprise there.

Yesterday at the University of Toronto's People's Circle for Palestine, a woman carrying an Israeli flag pulled out a knife on one of the protesters. Toronto police did not arrest her, did not take her knife, nor make her leave the space.

Why do all these crazies have that weird smile as they threaten and insult people, and why are TO cops so gentle with them?

Apparently Israelis think they have the last word on who is or isn't Jewish!

Moshe Eizenman is an Israeli professor presently teaching at the University of Toronto, and this fact is one of the many disturbing aspects of this incident. Why does UofT have a foreign exchange program with a regime that practices apartheid and ethnic cleansing?

“Expose, divest; we will not stop, we will not rest”

Video from the University of Toronto encampment in solidarity with Palestine shows hundreds of students participating in a nighttime protest, calling for the university to divest from its ties with Israel.

In a positive outlook for 2024, #universities across #Canada are introducing more #PlantBased or #vegan food options. Many of the universities have stated this is due to ongoing demand from students for more variety - and a larger push for more sustainable practices.

A number of universities are taking the lead, notably:

-#WesternUniversity. The university set a goal of having a 40 per cent plant-based menu at all dining halls by the new year, but it hit the target — and at some points even surpassed it — this year. A fully vegan outlet will open in 2024, and the school wants to reach a 50 per cent target in 2025.
-#TheUniversityOfBritishColumbia. 55 per cent of the food in dining halls is plant-based, and the Vancouver school hopes to reach a goal of 80 per cent by 2025.
-#ConcordiaUniversity in Montreal plans to reduce its purchase of meat, dairy and eggs by 30 per cent.
-#DalhousieUniversity in Halifax aims to offer a menu with at least 50 per cent plant-based food options by 2030.
-#UniversityOfToronto. Plant-based options represented less than half of the universities food services offerings two years ago, but now account for 61 per cent.

Vegan Australia is advocating for Australian universities* to gain inspiration from these progressive examples, and embrace a fully vegan food system for the benefit of the planet, humanity, and for the animals.
