Our #Boiler was playing up over the weekend and plumber did a patch repair but definitely need a new one 🙁 though at least he got it working before he left. #Boiler model is 28 years old (we inherited it and have been here for just over 17.5 years) so hardly surprising.

Here's a new blog post for today about the water heater that I installed over the weekend.
Sounds dull, right ? Well this might actually save half of our total energy bill.
Replacing the antiquated gas boiler with an electric boiler running from our solar panels has been on the to-do list for years, but we kept prioritizing other things to save energy. Because the other work kept reducing our total energy consumption, that which remained from the water heater started to look a bit silly as it was costing us nearly half of our total annual energy bill for absolutely everything that we do in our work and private life.
Anyway, the job is done now. While water boilers really are a bit boring, this job brings us one step closer to being completely free of fossil fuel.
What I particularly appreciate is that when I return home from exercising I can now take a completely fossil-fuel free shower. Today the sun heated up my shower water while I cycled.

Heating system people! I need a new #boiler at short notice. Long term I want a #heatpump but now is not the time. However I’m wondering what I can/should do to enable a future transition?

Things I’m thinking:
• ensure boiler supports weather compensation
• plan for lower temperatures, replacing rads where necessary
• stick with existing hot water cylinder rather than getting a combi

Anything else I should consider?

In case this helps anyone else, we went through the #Octopus Winter Workout & turned down our #boiler flow settings. The guide states there should be no difference in performance, but our heating has struggled & I've had to run it much more than usual to keep the temp at 18 😟

Cue a little more reading: it seems if you have an older house this is often the case. Although we've had our walls, loft, and windows done, our 70's build is still poor at retaining heat.

Flow settings back up, and 🏆
