#NowPlaying this very odd cassette I randomly picked up last Bandcamp Friday from Spanish label Strategic Tape Reserve (the ones who included a "mostly safe" alcohol wipe to use "before handling the tape"). I feel like I just entered some sort of portal.

I did this amazing recording of a tree swaying in the wind and knocking at another tree the other day for my upcoming mini exhibition at Notam. It was recorded by sticking a Geofin in between the roots to get the sound of the wind from the perspective of the tree.

I will resynthesize this as a vibrator motor signal for the exhibition too. Pretty excited!

Ever wondered what the Baltic Sea or the southern Indian coast sounds like? Or how a stroll through Brescia’s old town feels acoustically? In my latest blog post, I invite you to explore these and other places visually and through sound. I compare photos and recordings of the same location to show how time and space are experienced differently through sight and hearing.

More new sounds. This one has audio from a conga instruction video, a Max Roach drum solo, a popular song by Indonesian singer Angii Marito and a field recording of a Hindu street procession literally on their way to the temple (they had a trumpet player). Also a m4l drum synth, a high-hat sample from a DMX drum machine and various effects. Five or six full length live overdubs mastered in Ableton:

Important milestone for my timecode gizmo: this is the first successful syncing using a cell phone and the Teensy board implementing an USB audio device, plugged as an external mic into the USB-C port. This is important as I'm pivoting my project toward youtubers rather than indy cinematographers who are already using overpriced and counter intuitive SMPTE LTC generators in their workflow 😏

A couple of weeks ago, I set out before dawn to capture binaural audio recordings of the elusive Kōkako at Otanewainuku Reserve in New Zealand. While they remained too high in the canopy for me to photograph, I wasn’t disappointed. I managed to record some incredible audio of their calls. In this picture, however, is a little pīwakawaka & Kererū instead. 🫶🦅🌳

Of course! Here’s a mix of hashtags focused on both audio recording and photography:

I did this field recording last month of quite a lot of crows in Seattle. This is actually two consecutive recordings, one after the other, recorded a short distance apart. Some traffic and airplane noise, too. soundcloud.com/matthew-m-conro #sound #crows #seattle #fieldrecording #birds

I use an 'old' Audio-Technica AT825 for field recording and it's an awesome device for this. But I never had to research to get a new one, and the ones you find on ebay are often quite damaged and need fixing. Any other field recorder that could recommend a ~300$ mic for field recording, not a shotgun mic, but to capture the ambiant sounds and stereo.
