Here are a couple of wooden figures I carved. I tried a new technique—burning patterns into the wood with a soldering iron. I think it worked quite well. These figures don’t really have a specific story behind them, but perhaps they could be seen as some kind of spirits or gnome-like beings from Finnic folk belief. Kalevala often comes to mind with wooden figures like these, but that’s not really my goal or intention when carving. The pieces just tend to turn out the way they do. I don’t usually make detailed plans, as I wouldn’t know how to follow them through into finished works anyway.

Over the bank holiday I had a sale out of the blue and had to rummage for hours to find this blackthorn spirit, then clean up and re-oil back to a respectable state. I always liked this one, cracks and all.

I recently mentioned on Mastodon that I've been doing some wood carving. Working with wood is a calming activity amidst a hectic life, and it feels good to create something that leaves a tangible mark. Carving also gives me a sense of connection to a long tradition of cultural creation through woodworking. This piece symbolizes the layers of generations, which eventually are broken down by decomposers like fungi, returning to become the building blocks of new life.

If I have time and energy. 😅 In the last time I'm trying to do food miniatures with polymer clay. This is my first try at a cake, after I saw some awesome reel of something like this on Instagram. I also have some cookies and donuts in the making - but haven't found time to finish them. (Sorry for the bad light, it's nearly 10 pm here.)

This is my newest addiction I wanted to try. It's my first finished miniature shelf. 😁 The measurements for the shelf are 6 x 5,5 x 1,8 cm.

I have taken up whittling for the little dollhouse in the last week, after having wanted to try it for years. I am not sure what gave me the push to do it, but I have been having quite some fun. I have made little eggs, a faucet, an orange juice, a watering pot, a butter, some carrots, and other little things besides.

The most difficult part of this has been deciding what to do next and work around the arthritis in my left hand’s thumb.

Last weekend the family started an interesting new project together. We started learning how to whittle by carving our own wooden spoons! I purchased some roughed out blanks of an easy-to-carve wood and a couple small whittling knives including a hook knife for carving the bowl.
We spent about 2 hours together on the porch learning. Everyone had fun and hopefully we can continue together on Sunday. #bushcraft #spoons #carving #whittling
