Talking in another Discord about #TTRPG systems with fewer rolls and math vs. more rolls and math.
I don't like taking them out entirely, I don't like systems where you're just telling stories to each other.
Why not?
Because that's not what I'm here for. I'm not here for your improv. It's going to be a pastiche of other, better sources.
But once we start mixing in some rules and rolls, then it takes us to a place that's more chaotic than your imagination. That's where serendipity happens.
@apontious Never underestimate the story transforming power of one well-timed critical fumble.
@apontious I too love emergent storytelling and having to deal with the unexpected fumble. Also succeeding at something unlikely, and having stakes makes the story being told more interesting
@apontious Personally, my sweet spot of probability curve RNG is FATE (least swingy system I know). The more swingy a game's RNG, the more I'll dislike it. I like consistent character performance and dislike comedies of errors.
Also, while games require math, I draw the line at needing a scientific calculator for something as basic as chargen *cough*HERO*cough*
@GamesPeoplePlay Yeah, I might have another look at FATE.
