I was reading an article in today's Washington Post about how analytics, and then optimization based on those analytics, has hurt the on-the-field/court product in MLB and the NBA, and holy crap, I felt like I was reading about D&D optimization!

@Tim_Eagon Yea, I can see similarities - with published D&D having an ongoing drive for the "perfect mechanic", when I think it truly is the sum of the parts that keeps me playing OD&D/AD&D after 50 years...
@chgowiz @Tim_Eagon Optimization hurt playing World of Warcraft back in the day. Instead of joining a raid and having a good time, people started analyzing spreadsheets and download mods to optimize damage, healing rotations.
@randomwizard Ha! That's right! I never played WoW, but I remember how surprised I was listening to that classic "Leroy Jenkins" video and hearing someone crunch numbers on the raid they were about to do... @Tim_Eagon
@chgowiz @randomwizard my eyes have made several revolutions in my head due to people talking about their build’s DPR.
@randomwizard @Tim_Eagon and because I have chicken...

@chgowiz it’s why I’ve been gravitating towards games where it’s damn near impossible to optimize because there are no builds.
@Tim_Eagon This is also why I've always enjoyed the first person games - for the most part, I can ignore "builds" and enjoy stories and experiences.
