Reading books (in this case, the core rules) and watching alternative music videos from 1991-92. If I was drinking Mt Dew, it would be just like I was back in high school.

Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit" just came on. I remember watching that video for the first time late at night on MTV, sometime in fall/winter 91-92. I don't want to say that it changed my life, as that's a tad dramatic, but it was revelation for a somewhat musically sheltered kid from rural adjacent Wisconsin. It definitely opened new vistas of music, art, and ideas. And that video is still cool AF.

@Tim_Eagon

'On September 29, 1991, Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit" video premiered on MTV's "120 Minutes," an event that, in the years that followed, would come to signify the beginning of rock's great renaissance and usher in a cultural shift that would define a generation.' -per MTV.com

The impact this moment had on music cannot be understated, imo. 😎

@Tim_Eagon I had been listening to their previous album, but my version of this was after Mother Love Bone, picking up the Pearl Jam album, Ten. It was so different from rock back then… I had to listen to it multiple times before I suddenly got what it was doing and fell in love with it.

@Alphastream @Tim_Eagon Chris Cornell is what changed my musical tastes.

@bedirthan @Alphastream @Tim_Eagon In the 80s I listened to the Cure, Depeche Mode, then the Smiths, the Pixies, and when Nirvana hit in the 90s it felt like we had finally won. Music wasn't some record company pushing an album to his network to get air play.

@Alphastream @randomwizard @bedirthan We can. Those bands are out there, but as a culture, we've collectively ceded too much to corporations that make a similar break through so hard.

@Tim_Eagon @Alphastream @randomwizard one neat trick is going to festivals for the early/fine print acts.

@Tim_Eagon @Alphastream @randomwizard @bedirthan Having a kid who’s into finding different bands has been awesome. Not all his faves are to my liking but he did turn me onto The Struts, who I prolly never would’ve heard otherwise.

@hadoken @Alphastream @randomwizard @bedirthan My 5-year old likes "Daddy's music," but my 12-year old's musical tastes are defined by TikTok and YouTube.

@Tim_Eagon I think the pivotal music video moment for me was Metallica's One, but agreed that Smells Like Teen Spirit is an all-time top tier entry.

@bss Even when Metallica got really big with "Enter Sandman," it was hard to see the "One" video, but man, did that rock hard AF.

@Tim_Eagon Great song and video. When it came out, I loved it. I was a big fan of the "garage band" alternatives with their rough edges and honesty, after so many years of corporate BS music in the post-punk era. It was a huge breath of fresh air for me.

@croyle I didn't really have well defined music tastes until around that time. I had started dipping my toes into alternative music when I got the first 120 Minutes sampler cassette tape, but Nirvana solidified it. I still mainly listen to punk, post-punk, and alternative/college rock from 1975-1995 (plus many of the bands in the 2000s influenced by those earlier works).
