As 2024 comes to a close, it's time for

I didn't get to game in person this year, having spent most of 2024 on the road, and much of that in Tasmania. cons happen in cities, and caravan parks in cities are *expensive,* almost motel expensive. (Also, gamer culture in Tasmania's rudimentary at best—no cons and only a couple of FLGSs.)

But I *did* play 556.5 hours online. This past year, I played (those marked * for the first time):

Despite playing for a similar number of hours to 2023, my choices of game were much more conservative this year. Given my wife's worsening health and the space and time constraints that travelling in the caravan imposed upon us, I mostly stuck to games I knew, or systems that were very similar. It was just easier that way—I could devote time I'd normally use to learn new systems to other, more pressing concerns.

That said, though, I got to play the classic White Plume Mountain, an abridged version of 's equally noteworthy “Ancients" saga (albeit mostly in ), @Splinterbone's ongoing campaign, an irregular game, began campaigns of and , and proudly participated in Al Smith's likely endless reimagining of 's colossal , featuring amongst many other embellishments…

Dave J

The Gay Wedding of Jackson Elias.

Plus I also managed sneak peeks at Chainsaw, Echoes of Yesterday, new editions of and , and . Some brief thoughts on specific games follow…

Chainsaw: This Mörk Borg derivative, still in playtesting, works very well for running slasher horror, though I find its fear mechanic currently too crunchy (and deathy!) a death spiral. It's still in development, though, so hopefully this'll be addressed before its release.

[5/13]

Cypher: I had issues with Numenera's mechanics for years, and though I've finally learnt to live and let live, I find Cypher too loose for my liking. OTOH, I feel the same way about FATE and Savage Worlds, and they're both very successful systems, too.

[6/13]

D&D 5e 2024 (or whatever it’s called this week): It's an improvement IMO, but since 5e’s my least favourite iteration of D&D (excepting maybe Pathfinder 1e, which retained many of the bad things about D&D 3.5), it's a low bar. That said, though, can we PLEASE give it a proper fucking edition designation? It’s a , not a brand of cola; it may not be 6e, but it's at least 5.3.

[7/13]

Liminal: It didn't leave a huge impression on me, but I only played the one game back in September. I always confuse this with Liminal Horror, but whereas the latter is firmly survival horror, Liminal's more investigative urban fantasy, in the vein of Rivers of London, or the upcoming Pleasant Green campaign frame for Trail of Cthulhu 2e.

[8/13]

The One Ring 2e: I enjoy TOR a whole lot more than I expected, not least because our GM’s very on-the-ball and has an ardent passion for Tolkien. The system's also growing on me, though I do find the rulebook a little poorly organised. Though it handles social encounters well, the combat subsystem, particularly fighting stances, strike me as a quite the elegant solution, even if I'm still trying to work out the core resolution mechanic. (Damn you, weirdly marked dice!)

[9/13]

Sanction: A generalisation of the rules in The Dee Sanction, it's quite simple mechanically, and reminds me a lot of Cortex, in that character abilities are expressed in die sizes. I quite like it.

[10/13]

Space: 1999: I'm glad this British scifi cult classic got its own , but it's not really my cup of tea TBH. Another iteration of Modiphius’ 2d20 system, it works well enough, though I feel that diehard fans of the show probably play some other game system, and that 2d20's not as neat a fit as, say, Dune: Adventures in the Imperium.

[11/13]

Moving along, in 2025, I'll tackle a new, weekly game (), as well as continuing campaigns of OSE, , , , , and from 2024. And at the very least, I'll get to play in person at , if not other cons and game days (possible now because I've finally settled down in a city). In all likelihood, I'll probably finally catch COVID, but that's the price of assembling in crowds these days, I guess.

[12/13]

Anyway, if you've made it this far, have a Happy New Year, and may all your d6s roll 20s! 😉
