Been playing Trophy Gold with my in-person group lately, and I've been *loving* it, far far more than I expected to. I've never been a long-term campaign person, but I could honestly see myself playing a year long campaign of this
Unfortunately my group isn't loving it, so no such luck
@konahart aw boo! Sorry to hear that.
What did you enjoy about it?
@nickdrawthing I already loved Trophy Dark, but I was skeptical about the idea of a campaign-mode version. Part of the charm is knowing that your character is doomed, right? However, the mechanics Gold adds for campaign play seem really interesting — slowly spiralling into a wretch who's risked their neck time after time and come away scarred but not quite dead yet. And they'll keep going until their number finally comes up, because they have to, because they are haunted by their Burdens
@nickdrawthing Part of it, of course, is having the right group. Although some of my group wasn't into it, they're still very creative storytellers.
But also, one of Trophy Dark's "weaknesses" is that the one-shot nature means you don't get a lot of time for character exploration. With Gold, you can linger in moments, have character-focused scenes, and not detract from the overall story arc because you have more than one session. We took 4 sessions to get through the intro incursion, which...
@nickdrawthing ... a more mechanics-focused group might have gotten through in 2 sessions. I felt we could have spent even more time on establishing the environment, wallowing in the horror of the place, etc. However, our group is frankly too big (5 players) for us not to get bogged down if we want to know what all the characters are doing in a scene.
@konahart interesting! I do love a doomed character! That sounds pretty fun. Thanks for the breakdown
I can see it being an acquired taste though too. Hopefully you get a chance to play it more fully someday!
@konahart love me some #TrophyGold I mostly #osr style games, but i need a 10% share of storygaming for a fulfilling #ttrpg life I guess and Trophy (which also features osr elements) creates super atmospheric narratives if everyone is on board for the dark fantasy / horror tropes (I absolutely crave). I reckon I owe some my best ttrpg moments to Trophy. What a majestic achievement this game is. Never played Trophy in campaign mode though. Wonder how this might work out?
@PenPaperDice @konahart I like how the burden-mechanics pushes the game forward. The players are well aware that danger and horrors lie ahead, but know that the cannot leave and return to base/home… not yet
