The best time to abandon anything Meta touches was years ago. The second best time is today.
@martinralya Left Facebook before it was cool. Somehow ended up creating a Instagram account about 2-3 years ago. Maybe I should do something with it. Like delete it.
I shut my Facebook account in 2013, never looked back. Never had Instagram or WhatsApp.
I will keep telling people this, not to be smug, but to highlight that it IS possible
@martinralya
I'm the weirdo who never joined it in the 1st place
@martinralya Started the deletion process…
@martinralya dumped FB in 2016, when it started pushing trump stuff. Together with getting off Twitter one of the best choices for my quality of life
@martinralya Facebook set off alarm bells for me from the start, so I never touched it.
@martinralya Only have Facebook, refuse to touch anything else from them.
@martinralya much of my photography side business comes from exposure on Facebook. Unfortunately for most it’s not that simple. I am deleting my threads though.
@martinralya Obviously.
@martinralya -The constant pull of having family and friends on it.
@lachlanmackenzie @martinralya
Same. My compromise is I only open messenger, because of the groups I'm in.
@martinralya anything in particular that happened or just the usual Meta stuff? Or is it both? For those of us who already removed them from their perception.
@alexocado I mean it's a target-rich environment, but here's today's news: https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2025/jan/07/meta-facebook-instagram-threads-mark-zuckerberg-remove-fact-checkers-recommend-political-content.
@martinralya there's a certain satisfaction to being able to say "I told you so".
@martinralya I quit facebook in 2018, and deleting my Instagram 8 months ago. Never regretted either decision.
@martinralya I was assisted in abandoning Facebook about three years ago by a hacker who managed to log in to my account and change both the password and the phone number. The latter change meant I couldn't use the "forgot my password" feature, because it works by texting me a numeric code and of course it could no longer text me. When I attempted to call Facebook's Customer Service department to try to get this fixed, I ran headlong into the fact that I wasn't a customer; I was a product, and they don't have a Product Service department. I could have just created a new account and attempted to reconnect with all my friends, but that seemed like more trouble than it was worth to be on a platform that I was already starting to have serious doubts about.
I left fbk and instagm about 7 years ago, I only abandoned Xitter after smusk took over.
@martinralya true story #FactChecked.
I feel very proud of myself. I dumped Facebook years ago when the first reports of their privacy shenanigans started to come out.
Didn't hurt that People From The Past with whom I had no interest in maintaining relationships had started to come out of the woodwork.
