The camas are in full flower at the Camassia Natural Area, a small park owned by the Nature Conservancy in West Linn, OR. The trail loop is 3,000 ft over basalt and plank walkways over marshes. Tall oaks, madronas (shown here), and other trees provide cover for birds, and an osprey nests in a nearby tower.

Poison oak is abundant right along the path, so remember "leaves of three, let it be."

Camas (Camassia quamash) growing abundantly. Each stalk carries perhaps a dozen open deep blue-purple flowers. They are situated among green grass.

A tall madrona (Arbutus menziesii) tree stands out against a blue sky. The tree is mostly bare, showing off its characteristic peeling cinnamon red bark, with some green leaves and white flowers at the very top.

I love interesting tree #bark. These are two very different old growth trees & their unique bark #textures
#Arbutus / #Madrona & Western Red #Cedar.

How it started…

we found 4 little arbutus seedlings in a forest back in December 2020. We dug them up and brought them home, planting them in various places around the yard. This is the only one to survive! #home #gardening #arbutus #PacificMadrone #trees

The arbutus is over 10ft tall I think! I think we can officially say that this transplanted baby has established itself
and is thriving!

Arbutus trees are protected in many parts of BC. On our walk, we found several pieces of perfect, wide shedded bark!

An arbutus (two views) for #ThickTrunkTuesday

This is a panorama (four images) of a section of shoreline at Cole's Bay Regional Park. There are four Douglas fir trees framing the left/right edges, but the center of the frame is occupied by a large arbutus (Pacific madrone) tree that splits into two equal trunks about halfway up from the base.

This is a two-image panorama of the same arbutus tree; this image is much closer and shows the extensive root base as the tree grows up from and around its mostly rocky base. The orange-red bark of the madrone is quite clear to see.

The tiny arbutus rescue is no longer tiny! It is nearly as tall as the top railing of the deck which is about 15ft! I would think we transplanted it when it was about 1 year old in January 2021, so it is going-on 4 years old.

I dismantled the old fence this morning. The tree will now be free to spread itself a little but we will at some point need to manage it's growth!
