More than 1m cars sold in UK each year too big to fit typical parking space
theguardian.com/environment/20?

"Larger cars are more deadly in crashes than smaller ones, as they weigh more and have tall front ends that trap victims beneath them instead of knocking them to the side."

Update: With cars getting 5mm wider every year, and bigger cars more likely to kill other road users as well as pumping out ever more emissions, Paris votes to triple parking charges for vehicles over 1.6 tons, some, but not all of which, are SUVs, a distinction that is apparently important to car nerds.

With cars getting 5mm wider every year, and bigger cars more likely to kill other road users as well as pumping out ever more emissions, Paris votes to triple parking charges for #SUVs. This seems like an excellent strategy for avoiding the potentially regressive nature of schemes like London't #ULEZ which potentially penalises poorer people with older cars.

European cars are getting 1cm wider every 2 years #autobesity

"Crash data from Belgium from 2017 to 2021 shows that a 10cm increase in the height of vehicle fronts raises the risk of death by 30% when a car hits a pedestrian or cyclist, according to a study by the Vias Institute, previously the Belgian Institute for Road Safety."

The Guardian · SUVs drive trend for new cars to grow 1cm wider in UK and EU every two years, says reportBy Ajit Niranjan

A lot of people out there don't seem to be bringing this up, but the #HummerEV actually weighs even MORE than the #Cybertruck (by a good >3,000 pounds), while having similar total dimensions. The Cybertruck weighs around 6-7,000 pounds and the Hummer EV weighs around 10,000 pounds.

Or in other words, if you happened to hit by either vehicle, chance of survival is probably close to zero (even at slower speeds) because of both weight and the lack of a sloped front.

END #AUTOBESITY NOW.

A story that perfectly illustrates #autobesity is that my parents bought their house two years and are now planning to get the drive widened. They've had to park in the street that whole time because the drive has walls on both sides and if they park in it they can't open the car doors to get put. It's one of those postwar houses, so presumably the drive was perfectly adequate for ~60 years worth of cars till they moved in.

‘Autobesity’ on course to worsen air pollution caused by motoring theguardian.com/environment/20

We need to get rid of Wankpanzers. Regulate based on max vehicle mass and tyre width. That will shrink and slow, reducing emission and NEE pollution considerably.

Definitely agree with this article that the rise of oversized utes on Australian roads is something we should be pushing back on, and it seems I'm not the only one concerned about the massive blind spots these cars have directly in front of the vehicle.

From the article:
"While they might feel like they sit nice and high with good visibility, the boxy front grille (which primarily exist to make the vehicles look “tough”) actually creates huge blind spots. A news crew put this to the test. They lined up a group of kids in front of a Ford F-150 until they were visible from the driver’s seat. It wasn’t until the eleventh child joined the row that a ponytail and the top of their head could be seen."

More than 150 car models too big for regular parking spaces
The ‘autobesity’ epidemic eats up public spaces

"More than 150 car models are now too big to fit in average car parking spaces. While the size of the standard parking bay has remained static for decades, cars have been growing longer and wider in a phenomenon known as “autobesity”."

Paris to charge SUV drivers higher parking fees to tackle ‘auto-besity’

> Paris city hall is to impose higher parking fees on owners of SUVs in its battle to reduce pollution in the capital.

> Details of the charges have not been announced but the size, weight of the vehicle and its motor will be taken into consideration.

Parking charges based on vehicle weight
"In Paris, owners of big, heavy cars will have to pay extra to park. Size, weight and motor will be taken into account as councillors target ‘dangerous, cumbersome’ vehicles. The aim was “to focus on an absurdity: auto-besity … the inexorable growth in the weight and size of vehicles circulating in our cities..”.
"SUVs are dangerous, cumbersome and use too many resources to manufacture."
