I'm appalled at claims I've seen in various supposedly COVID-realist circles that the virus has apparently "evolved to become milder" despite the fact that there is no evidence for this. None whatsoever.

The reasons why fewer people appear to be dying from the virus are:

• No one can die twice (vulnerable populations have already been culled by fascist governments worldwide who used the virus to save money on long-term care)
• No one tests anymore (medical care providers have effectively stopped testing altogether)
• Vaccines (which do significantly reduce the chances of dying even though they don't significantly reduce the odds of becoming infected or developing Long COVID)
• Deaths are being misattributed (50-year-olds dying of heart attacks? NotCOVID™! Healthy and fit seniors experiencing swift decline after a bout with COVID, only to die shortly after? It's just old age!)

*sigh*

Talking with a very close friend today, and found out that after his first bout of Covid last year, in addition to the brain fog and fatigue I knew he had, apparantly it has also worsened his #diabetes and also seems to have caused polyphagia, which is something new to me.

Polyphagia is an insatiable appetite, always feeling hungry. It's also a known issue of #LongCOVID.

We are very close, and he is well aware of the dangers of Covid, but I didn't even know he had this. Goes to show - just because someone appears to act normally, they could still be suffering.

It's not over. It's not mild. Covid is a devastating disease.

It’s never a good thing to be in the same category as these other viruses…and the club’s hottest new member? COVID. 😬

“…numerous viruses cause cell fusion in other tissues, but also infect the nervous system and could be causing the same problem there. These viruses include HIV, rabies, Japanese encephalitis, measles, herpes simplex virus and Zika virus…"

@ai6yr Good article. Sums it up pretty well.

I especially appreciated these sections, screenshotted below (the denial/minimization/lack of awareness of which represent my main frustrations):

1) COVID does long term damage beyond the initial infection,
2) kids’ immune systems are being destroyed, and
3) I am NOT crazy/irrational for continuing to mask and protect myself.

@ai6yr Have no fear! NBC says everything is fine (in case you were holding out hope that people might try to avoid this variant).

Thank goodness these “not worse” symptoms cause the same potentially irreversible neurological damage, heart/lung/kidney damage, compromised immune system, microclots, psych disorders, miscarriage, premature birth, and early onset Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s as previous variants…I feel better already! 🙄

Toot.CatDaywalkingRedhead (@DaywalkingRedhead@toot.cat)“It is time to own the damage that we are causing by infecting others with COVID-19. I believe that we all know, deep inside, that we are causing harm. And many of us are suffering from the cognitive dissonance of pretending that we aren’t. Because, in a pandemic, this is serious and large-scale harm. This harm that, according to estimates, has killed over 25 million people and disabled at least 65 million and counting. The sooner we face the harm we are causing by infecting other people, the less damage we will cause to ourselves, to our loved ones, to our community, to strangers on the other side of the world. And to people who entertain and inspire us, like speculative fiction author and TV creator Neil Gaiman. And inspiration is necessary when we are facing so many challenges. It’s that simple. Since I can’t expect everyone to have the time to read to the end of this article, and I’ve been told that my prose style is “not simple” (but I’m a screenwriter and am teaching myself journalistic writing as I go, so bear with me) here are some relevant facts, based on settled knowled, about COVID-19 infections: • COVID-19 is a serious, multi-system vascular disease that creates severe and cumulative damage. • Reinfections tend to be more severe and Long COVID occurs in 1/10–1/3 infections. • Up to 60% of infections are spread asymptomatically… Wait, let me rephrase that. People, who are asymptomatic, or presymptomatic, are infecting others with COVID-19 in up to 60% of cases. • A person who is presymptomatic can transmit a COVID-19 infection up to two days before symptoms arise. • People infect other people with SARS-CoV-2 through aerosols. An infected person expels them just by exhaling. The aerosols accumulate in the air, and spread across large spaces like cigarette smoke. They also remain in the air for hours, so even if a room is empty, if a symptomatic person was there earlier, the aerosols will still be there. Crowded, indoor spaces are high-risk for transmission. • We are currently in a wave caused by a new variant for which a vaccine has yet to be developed. In a crowd of 100, statistically 1-2 people will have active infections. If we put all of this together, we see that live events in crowded, indoor spaces are particularly dangerous, and that masking only when someone is symptomatic is woefully inadequate to prevent infecting others. So, in order to not infect other people, we need to individually mask at these events, and to collectively apply pressure to venues that are enabling these infections, as well as to lawmakers who have removed protections. That’s the tl;dr. Now, if you have some time, and feel motivated to prevent further infections, let’s look more systematically at the problem of people infecting other people, especially at live events, and how to constructively address it.” https://www.okdoomer.io/someone-infected-neil-gaiman-with-covid-19/
