Armure lesbienne - Je décris les idées et le processus de création de ma dernière pièce d'armure, un top en cotte de maille en hommage au drapeau lesbien.

J'ai commencé ce projet en 2022 avec l'idée de faire la plus grande surface possible avec mes ressources, j'avais en tête une robe. C'était probablement trop ambitieux pour arriver à la finir d'une traite. Je l'ai mise en pièce plusieurs fois, pour en faire un t-shirt, puis un châle, puis une jupe. C'est la beauté de ce medium, tant qu'on opère avec soin, la cotte de maille est réutilisable, en gardant des surfaces les plus grandes possibles, mais s'il le faut même anneau par anneau (sauf pour la cotte de maille rivetée, c'est un art très différent).

Dans l'état actuel j'ai l'impression d'avoir terminé, dans le sens, où je peux porter cette pièce sans me dire en permanence "non je veux changer ça", même si je sais déjà ce que je voudrais changer juste en regardant les photos.

J'espérais réaliser un top que je pourrais porter sans rien dessous, j'ai peur de ne pouvoir le faire que dans des contextes privés ou festifs, dans la vie de tous les jours je vais garder un t-shirt dessous ! 

L'idée d'ajouter le labrys est venue il y a quelques semaines, en réalisant que j'allais manquer d'anneaux anodisé violets pour finir le projet. Il est hasardeux de commander des pièces en plusieurs fois, parce que les bains de couleurs peuvent changer énormément d'un mois, d'une année sur l'autre, donc j'ai voulu insérer des anneaux nature. Comme mon objectif était de faire un triangle, afin d'avoir un bord lisse en respectant le sens des mailles, j'ai eu l'idée du premier drapeau lesbien.

Ce design a été créé en 1999 par un homme (a priori ?), Sean Patrick Campbell, qui est aussi responsable des drapeau Bear, Cowboy, et Feather/Drag. La hache a double tranchant, héritage des Amazones, est un symbole féministe lesbien depuis les années 1970 ; le triangle noir est le patch imposé aux lesbiennes dans les camps de concentration nazis (Wikipedia). Quant à la couleur violette, c'est un symbole saphique (littéralement), en lien avec un poème de Sappho où elle pleure une amoureuse perdue, Atthis, qui portait des fleurs violettes (plusieurs traductions de ce poème grec éolien). Il n'était pas question pour moi de reproduire un drapeau à l'identique, mais de rendre hommage à des symboles qui seront repéré par… les bonnes personnes.

This is what I call a chainmail panel top, or crop top. It is composed of front and back panels of European 4 in 1 chainmail attached by sets of chain straps. The panels are made from large anodized aluminum rings, while the straps are made from smaller bright aluminum rings. The front panel has a subtle taper at the bottom, while the back panel stops abruptly. The shoulder and armpit straps provide security, and the waist strap is primarily for decoration. There are no clasps on this piece and it is intended to go on and off over the head. This results in no adjustability and a smaller range of body types that it will fit, so finding a way to make this adjustable would be beneficial. #chainmail #chainmaille #armor #maker #crafts #fashion #aluminum #croptop

This is a chainmail piece that I have been referring to as a crosshatch top. There may be a more correct term for this style, however I am not aware of it. It is composed of two main pieces, a choker (featured standalone in a previous post) and two chestpieces. These two parts are connected with a set of magnetic clasps. Traditional clasps are connected in-line with the magnetic clasps when greater stability is required. There are two kinds of magnetic clasp featured, as I have been prototyping stronger magnetic clasps. The large, round magnetic clasps are stronger than the earlier small angular ones. The round variety also swivels, preventing tangles in the connection. The majority of the chainmail is bright aluminum, not anodized. Small rubber rings are used around the edge of the chestpieces to create a gather. Traditional clasps are used around the back of the choker and the back of the two chestpieces. The clasp around the back provides sizing and tension options. Overall, the magnetic clasps on this piece were an experiment in ease of use for clasps, and could also be used by a burlesque dancer or similar. So far this prototype has not been successful, as the magnets are still too weak for real-world use. Further attempts could utilize electromagnets or other novel electronic clasping. This is a large scalemail pauldron. It hangs off one shoulder while wrapping under the opposite arm for support. It is composed of anodized aluminum scales, starting with uncolored scales with black trim at the top, then changing to fully black scales partway down. This is a chainmail piece I call a triangle scale top. A clasp around the top connects to chain triangles which expand to form the neckline. Once the expansion is complete, the chainmail connects to scalemail contractions which complete the top. The scales are two toned, with primarily silver and black trim. The two halves are connected in the middle of the chest, as well as by a chain which runs around the back. Decorative chains hang low between the two halves. This piece has two clasps, one around the neck and the other at the back. The clasp chains are intentionally made too long in order to allow for adjustments when putting on the top. The excess chain also performs a decorative function. The piece is made of bright aluminum rings with anodized aluminum scales. #chainmail #chainmaille #scalemail #armor #crafts #maker #aluminum
