We’re all familiar with sales, and they can be a valuable marketing tactic. Digital goods such as ebooks don’t have a per-unit cost, so the price can be dropped very low, giving readers a great bargain. This can stimulate a great number of sales, potentially leading to readers that will buy more books at full price.

Newsletters such as BookBub and Fussy Librarian will advertise cut-price ebooks to their readers. These sites can be an excellent way to promote a sale.

The instructions below are for ebooks, since they are the format most commonly discounted. The process is the same for paperback and hardback books.

Setting a discount price on Amazon KDP

To set a sale price on your ebook at Amazon, log in to your KDP dashboard. Find the book that you wish to discount, and hover your mouse over the button with three dots under “Kindle ebook actions”. From the list of options that appears, click “Edit eBook pricing”.

This will take you to the pricing page. Scroll down to “Pricing, royalty, and distribution” section. Here you can set the new price in each territory. Note that if you set a price below $2.99, you will need to ensure that the 35% royalty plan is selected, not the 70% plan.

When the prices are set as you wish, scroll down and click the yellow “Publish Your Kindle eBook” button. It can take up to 72 hours for the new price to take effect, so you will need to allow for this if you have marketing scheduled, such as a slot in a newsletter.

Scheduling a discount price at Draft2Digital

Draft2Digital allow you to schedule a discount price in advance. To do this, log in to your Draft2Digital account. Find the book that you wish to discount, and click on the title to view the book. Then click on the green “Promotion” tab.

The area below the book will change to “Promotion Details”. Within that area, click the orange “Schedule a promotion” button.

A new box will appear for the promotional details. Simply set a new price, then click “Promotional territorial prices” to set the price in currencies other than US dollars. Enter a name for the promotion, and click in the calendar for the start and end dates. When everything is set, click the orange “Schedule promotional price” button, then click “Submit” on the confirmation dialogue that appears.

The new sale will be listed under “Scheduled promotions”. The price will be automatically changed on the relevant dates.

Scheduling a discount price at DriveThruFiction

Like Draft2Digital, DriveThruFiction allows you to schedule a discount in advance. To do this, log in to DriveThruFiction, then click “Publish” in the top bar to go to the publisher hub. Click “Manage Sales” in the “Promotion” section.

On the “Manage sales” page, choose the percentage discount or fixed sale price. Then select the title to be discounted from the drop-down list and click “Add selected title”. If you wish, you can add multiple titles to the sale, and they will all be discounted.

Finally, set the start and end dates for the sale, and optionally add promotional text. Click “Preview” to see a preview of how the sale will be displayed, and when you are happy, click “Save sale”.

The “Manage sales” page lists all sales currently set up, but note that it will take a while for a new sale to show on that page. Sales can be edited or deleted from that page.
