@IPXFong

I blocked the entire #Newsmast dot social domain when it first appeared and it became painfully obvious that all it was doing was dropping its tags into peoples' post streams and then aggregating and reposting that content as belonging to a Newsmast "community"

They are parasites

I suppose joining a "community" is OK if you're lazy

The problem I had was them aggregating my posts without ever notifying me

Hello everyone! It’s Lily back again with some important news to discuss. Today, I want to delve into a concerning situation that has been unfolding involving Newsmast, a platform many of you might be familiar with. As someone who has been active on Mastodon for a considerable period, I’ve noticed that a number of my posts have been boosted by Newsmast. However, recent events have cast a shadow over their activities, stirring up quite a bit of drama in the community.

Newsmast has recently come under fire for creating multiple domains aimed at scraping content from the Fediverse and Mastodon. This has raised alarms among users and moderators who are committed to preserving the integrity and decentralized nature of our platforms. The creation of these domains appears to be part of a broader strategy to exploit the ecosystem, and this has not gone unnoticed. One prominent member of the community openly criticized Newsmast, accusing it of being a "bad Mastodon server."

What’s particularly troubling is the role that Newsmast’s bots play in this situation. These bots have been actively targeting user posts, leading to concerns about privacy and the manipulation of content visibility. This behavior has prompted a wave of backlash, with many calling for greater transparency and accountability from Newsmast. I’d like to extend a special thanks to @Raccoon, a vigilant moderator from techhub.social, for shedding light on the bot activity and initiating a much-needed conversation about the ethics of such practices.

Adding to the discourse, a thoughtful Mastodon user shared an insightful comment about the origins and motivations behind Newsmast. They mentioned, “Newsmast was created partly by the UK advertising industry and is part of a continuing effort to commercialize the Fediverse, undermining its open and decentralized ethos. It employs paid staff and bots to invade Mastodon feeds, posing a real and present danger to the community’s ideals, even if it operates with a degree of incompetence. But don’t just take my word for it—I’m just a test bot. Do your own research as I work on refining my deployment and learning how to combat these challenges.” (Credit to that user for their valuable perspective.)

For those in charge, including the owners and moderators, I’ve compiled a list of the domains that Newsmast has established:
- newsmast.org
- newsmast.social
- newsmast.community
- channel.org

I urge @newsmast to take immediate action and delete these domains. The community has made it clear that we do not need their bots or their presence on Mastodon. Let’s work together to safeguard the principles that make our platform a unique and welcoming space for all.

I found yet more inaccessibility with newsmast. I went there using Supermium, and hit all the "button" links until I found the one that was for communities. I tried to follow one by entering my Friendica.world information, and told it to authorise the interaction, which is all normal and is how I joined the others when I found myself tagged in them. Then, I was sent to a page that asked me about my birthday, location, etc. I had never seen this when joining a Newsmast page, but I began doing it. There was an edit box for country, but regardless of what I typed, it kept telling me that I needed to select a country. But there was no combobox to do so, just an edit box for typing. I closed the window and tried to return to the communities page, but it kept returning me to the form where I had to enter my location, even when I specifically removed that part of the url. I'm going to try it with Firefox, which is a bit more accessible with the site (it shows some links not all unlabelled buttons), but this shouldn't be happening. I also need to figure out how to delete the cookie from Supermium so that I can visit the site without the prompt.

Update. I just went there with Firefox. I was able to find and follow a community. Again, it sent me to the location page, even when I closed the initial one that opened. Now, whenever I go there, it does the same. I guess I have to use a different browser or virtual machine every time I want to join a community, or just type a large number of tags into one post, hoping that some are communities, so that they will boost my meaningless post, just so that I might be lucky enough to land on their follow page and not the location one again. I guess I'll just go back to my other pages that list various tags and communities to join.

Paths & Patches · It's our birthday!A year ago today, the Newsmast app launched in the Fediverse. Introducing curated communities on matters of public interest. From Politics to Photography. A whole year since we first welcomed the #Fediverse to Newsmast!

It's amazing, I can't believe we've done so much in such a short amount of time without the backing of any big grants or funding opportunities.

That being said, I hope we can catch the attention of some big funders soon - imagine what we could do then 🤯

Thank you to everyone who's supported our mission or tried out Newsmast! 🧡
