5 people killed per day on UK roads!

"Why we need the media to join the dots on road danger"

eta.co.uk/news/why-we-need-the

"But it missed something crucial. Harry’s death, while particularly high-profile, was not an isolated incident. On average, five people die on Britain’s roads every day. Families up and down the country are dealing with similar losses, often without the media attention or political outrage."

ETA Insurance · Why we need the media to join the dots on road dangerWhen the media fails to connect the dots on road danger, it distorts public understanding. Here’s why context matters - and what we’re missing.

Yesterday's death of a man in his 80s while cycling in Kerry brings to 26 the number of people killed while walking or cycling on Irish roads this year to date. They represent 36% of all road deaths.

25% of those killed were over the age of 80

58% were over the age of 60

6 of the 7 people killed while cycling were over the age of 60

All were killed by a person driving a motorised vehicle.

Bicycle Coalition of Greater Philadelphia organizes its local "Ride of Silence" next Wednesday, May 21, starting at the north apron of #Philadelphia City Hall, at 6:45pm.

give.bicyclecoalition.org/even

For the past 20 years, cyclists throughout Greater Philadelphia have come together to ride silently in honor of riders killed or injured by motorists. Although bicyclists have a legal right to share the road with motorists, the public often isn’t aware of these rights, and sometimes not aware of cyclists themselves. The goal of this annual, international event is to not have another ride, but to have a year with zero bicyclist deaths.

A cyclist killed Thursday morning in West Philadelphia after being struck by a privately owned construction truck has been identified as Jeffrey Ishibashi, 50, of Lansdowne.

Ishibashi was riding east on Baltimore Avenue around 8:15 a.m. and was struck by a white Mack truck also traveling east on Baltimore as it turned right to go south on 58th Street, police said.

Ishibashi was pronounced dead at the scene. His home address is 2½ miles from the crash site.

He appeared to be riding in the bike lane and had the right-of-way, according to the Bicycle Coalition of Greater Philadelphia, based on a member’s review of footage of the incident.

According to police, Ishibashi became lodged under the truck after he was struck.

The bike lane is unprotected and is not separated from car traffic.

Corcoran was biking near the Boston University Boathouse, at a part of Memorial Drive where the on-street bike lane merges onto the sidewalk. The initial investigation indicated that the driver lost control of his vehicle, police said in September. Massachusetts State Police said their Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section completed its investigation on March 4.

The human carnage on the roads - "accidents" and road violence

"In Australia, a country with a terrible occurrence and societal acceptance of violent road deaths (would we, for example, be so lackadaisical about the death “toll” were we measuring killings, accidental and otherwise, involving knives or dogs or lawnmowers?), we are culturally imbued with notions of our “rights” rather than our “privileges” when it comes to motor vehicle driving. Something to do with our vast expanses and wide-open roads perhaps."

Australians’ love affair with monster family cars

"These big cars are fuelling congestion, blocking up streets and outstripping the size of car parks, leading to calls to build bigger ones – dismaying safety and environment advocates."

"The Monash University Accident Research Centre has also found that larger cars are much more likely to cause deaths and serious injuries to other people when they’re in an accident."

Australians are obsessed with SUVs and huge utes, but experts say they are making our roads deadlier

"Also in recent years, Australia has spectacularly failed at its mission of bringing down road deaths and serious injuries. Speed – and their proclivity to be driven faster – and overall height make larger vehicles far more likely to kill or cause serious injury when hitting pedestrians, cyclists, motorbikes and smaller cars."

"Newstead warns how this mentality can lead to an arms race to larger cars for those wanting to bolster their own safety. Crucially, if a driver can’t make eye contact with a pedestrians, “they are going to drive as though they aren’t there”"

Cars create victims of everybody. This guy was foolish and the car turned that foolishness in to horrible injury and pain. There just isn't anything else in our society that so efficiently turns small mistakes in to such large consequences.
