In the research around #SocietalCollapse, once you get to the 18th century, revolutions start to pop up as a topic. To better understand the ideas and concepts important for revolutions, I read and summarized Hannah Arendt's "On #Revolution". In this she lays out how the two main revolutions of the 18th century played out (#AmericanRevolution and #FrenchRevolution), where they succeeded, where they failed and where they took different paths. Interestingly, one of her main conclusions is that we need more and better #democracy if we want to correct the errors of these past revolutions. If you want to learn more about this fascinating book, you can find my summary here: existentialcrunch.substack.com #HannahArendt

During my research around #SocietalCollapse, one thing that comes up again and is economic #inequality. It seems that there is something about it that makes societies inherently less stable and less able to tackle challenges ahead. To explore this more, I wrote this blog post: existentialcrunch.substack.com

In it I explore historical case studies around economic inequality and its effects, the problems of inequality across different time horizons and how historically we managed to reduce economic inequality.

The 2024 state of the climate report: Perilous times on planet Earth

Conclusion: "Despite six IPCC reports, 28 COP meetings, hundreds of other reports, and tens of thousands of scientific papers, the world has made only very minor headway on climate change, in part because of stiff resistance from those benefiting financially from the current fossil-fuel based system. We are currently going in the wrong direction, and our increasing fossil fuel consumption and rising greenhouse gas emissions are driving us toward a climate catastrophe. We fear the danger of climate breakdown. The evidence we observe is both alarming and undeniable, but it is this very shock that drives us to action. We recognize the profound urgency of addressing this global challenge, especially the horrific outlook for the world's poor. We feel the courage and determination to seek transformative science-based solutions across all aspects of society.. Our goal is to provide clear, evidence-based insights that inspire informed and bold responses from citizens to researchers and world leaders. Rapidly phasing down fossil fuel use should be a top priority...In a world with finite resources, unlimited growth is a perilous illusion."

Earth’s ‘vital signs’ show humanity’s future in balance, say climate experts
Record emissions, temperatures and population mean more scientists are looking into possibility of societal collapse, report says

Many of Earth’s “vital signs” have hit record extremes, indicating that “the future of humanity hangs in the balance”, a group of the world’s most senior climate experts have said.

More and more scientists are now looking into the possibility of societal collapse, says the report, which assessed 35 vital signs in 2023 and found that 25 were worse than ever recorded, including carbon dioxide levels and human population. This indicates a “critical and unpredictable new phase of the climate crisis”, it says.

The temperature of Earth’s surface and oceans hit an all-time high, driven by record burning of fossil fuels, the report found. Human population is increasing at a rate of approximately 200,000 people a day and the number of cattle and sheep by 170,000 a day, all adding to record greenhouse gas emissions.

The scientists identified 28 feedback loops, including increasing emissions from melting permafrost, which could help trigger multiple tipping points, such as the collapse of the massive Greenland icecap.

Global heating is driving increasingly deadly extreme weather across the world, they said, including hurricanes in the US and 50C heatwaves in India, with billions of people now exposed to extreme heat.

1/ When it comes to #SocietalCollapse, the focus is often on what factors might lead to it. But it is also relevant to look at how long things might take to recover. I tried to come up with an estimate by looking at each step of #SocietalDevelopment. I break this down roughly into:
* #HunterGatherer to early #agriculture
* Early agriculture to pre-industrial society
* Pre-industrial to industrial #society

In another exciting edition of WTF is Going on With #facebook...

My partner @LadyV came across this obvious #AI generated photo that's supposed to be actor Angelina Jolie. Then she looked at the comments. At least 100 of them, not ONE calls it out for being fake. In fact, most comments are the single word: "Nice" - which in turn usually has 2-4 likes each.

This video shows a long scroll of the comments. You have to see it to believe it for yourself.

If you're like me and you don't venture onto those platforms unless under duress, here's a terrifying glimpse into what you're "missing".

I think it's either 100% #bots on that page, or boy hell are we in trouble as a species.

Throughout #history, #humans have often engaged in self-destructive behavior, creating incentive systems that harm society as a whole. These processes have recently been named "#AnthropoceneTraps." In my latest post, I explore this concept further: What traps have we fallen into? How deeply are we ensnared? What can we do to break free? 🌍🪤

Our global #economy and especially the #food sector is very dependent on #trade. However, we lack understanding what might happen with our trade, if the system faces major disruptions. In the newest post of my #LivingLiteratureReview on #SocietalCollapse I explain the status quo of the food trade system, why it is so vulnerable and what we need to understand in the future: existentialcrunch.substack.com

Bill McGuire: Labour's Green U-Turn Has Left Me Feeling Hopeless

#KeirStarmer should think long and hard about the consequences

On the very day that the 1.5ºC dangerous climate change guardrail is smashed - for the first time - over the course of twelve months, the #labour party announces it is ditching its £28 billion #GreenInvestment pledge, claiming the country can't afford it. The reality is, however, that we can't afford not to do this.

Furthermore, using the excuse that the country can't afford it is simply nonsensical. At least two recent studies show that continued business as usual sets us firmly on course towards economic and societal #collapse, perhaps a soon as 2040.

Cool Earth · LABOUR'S GREEN U-TURN HAS LEFT ME FEELING HOPELESSBy Bill McGuire

I have been thinking and acting on Climate Change stuff since 1998 and today it dawned on me that my job in University education, and funding of public education in general, might be put in jeopardy because of the cost ($1.5B last year) to government of fighting Extreme Wildfire and Flooding events.

That was not on my bingo card.
