As we consider ways to implement #ActivityPub into our FOSS Community Calendar Ecosystem platform Koalagator, I've been looking over the differing specs for how to specify the event object schema.

Have any other folk wrestled with this?Asking before I get arms deep in this stuff.

For those playing at home...

W3C Activity Vocabulary - Event

This specification describes the Activity vocabulary. It is intended to be used in the context of the ActivityStreams 2.0 format and provides a foundational vocabulary for activity structures, and specific activity types.

Fediverse Enhancement Proposal
FEP-8a8e: A common approach to using the Event object type

ActivityStreams defines the Object Type Event. In real-world applications, the event object immediately showed the need for extension. Applications featuring Event objects have often chosen to add additional attributes and clarifications (i.e., interpretations) in order to implement their particular use case. This proposal clarifies and extends the ActivityPub standard to address the needs that have arisen in real-world implementations.

iCalendar Standard (RFC 5545)

iCalendar was first defined as a standard as RFC 2445 in 1998 by the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF). Today, iCalendar is used to import and synchronize events on various platforms, including smart phones, computer and web applications.

A reminder that if you're interested in #SVG and the #WebStandards process, and specifically about trying to get SVG standardization back into gear, there is an open meeting on the topic today. It's hosted by Eric Meyer ( @Meyerweb ) of Igalia, as part of W3C Breakouts Day.

Starts in 5.5 hours. You'll need a w3.org account to sign up; meeting is via zoom with irc chat.

It's CSS Naked Day on April 9th - consider this toot your one month warning to get your website ready in time to promote web (html!) standards and accessibility!

I still have lots of work to do on the accessibility front but I'm ready to get naked (sfw!) - in fact I made "no CSS" a theme option on my site to keep me fully aware of any html changes I make!

Hey web devs, ever used CSS Grid or the :has() selector? Ever wondered how they actually made it into browsers?

Stephanie Stimac (@seaotta) from Igalia (@igalia) spills the beans on how new web features get funded, developed, and shipped. Turns out, it’s not as simple as you’d think.

The Ladybird browser is a thing. Definitely dependent on commercial sponsorship, but so far all their sponsors are much smaller than the "big tech" tier of corporations.

What would really allow other organizations to step up would be a simplification of the Web Standards. Complexity of standards equals high entry cost equals oligopoly or monopoly.

I think the best thing going might be Gemini, a massively simplified version of the Web Standards, and there are plenty of Gemini browsers that have been implemented noncommercially. Only downside, the community of Gemini users probably isn't large enough to form a critical mass.

Poll: do you think servers generating link previews should obey robots.txt? I think they shouldn't, because that's a misinterpretation of the purpose of robots.txt. At least some of the folks who work on Mastodon seem to agree (github.com/mastodon/mastodon/i): "No other social media software has used robots.txt to govern its crawling."
