This is definitely one of my most prized possessions. It's a Romanian satirical newspaper called "Furnica" ("The Ant") from January 1910.

I love this because it's a very good reflection of the people's problems from over 100 years ago and it shows that they were exactly like us. Nothing's really changed. This is 3 years after the Romanian Peasants Revolt of 1907 (an important event in Romanian history) and 4 years before WWI. (1/2)

            WOMEN IN PRINT.

The following extract from a letter of a New Zealand lady now living in #England has been forwarded to the “Church News”: —“We were delighted to see in the old parish church (#Brockenhurst) the New Zealand flag hung in a prominent position, and a fresh large wreath of laurel hung above it. We were told that the wreath is always kept fresh, as the New Zealand #soldiers were so much liked and respected. There were thousands of them here, and one part of the churchyard is full of their #graves, over a hundred of them. A new bell has been added to the peal in the tower in memory of the New Zealand soldiers.”

#30DayMapChallenge 🗺️ Day 2️⃣1️⃣: Conflict

I figured a lot of mappers will create maps about recent wars and conflicts so I decided to create a map about #WorldWarI and see if #Wikidata is a good enough source for its battles, conflicts, and military operations.

I also wanted to know if there are any open data sources for historical borders, and I found one, CShapes! icr.ethz.ch/data/cshapes/

November 11 is, in France & the UK & others, the day of the end of the Great War (1914-1918), a worthwhile day to celebrate.

Novembre 11 is, in the USA, the day when Nat Turner, a black rebel slave, was executed in 1831: calendar.eji.org/racial-injust, also a worthwhile day to remember.

NELSON COLLEGE WAR MEMORIAL
The attention of the Old Boys of #Nelson College is directed to an advertisement in another column in connection with the opening of the #Scriptorium, which has been erected by the Old Boys’ Association as a memorial to the old boys of the college who fell in the late war. His Excellency the Governor-General will perform the opening ceremony and unveil the memorial tablet. The principal of the college desires to know as soon as possible the number of old boys likely to be attending the ceremony, and those intending to be present are requested to notify the honorary secretary of the Wellington branch of the Old Boys’ Association on or before Friday next.

         AN HISTORIC VESSEL
    FORMER RAIDER IN PORT
Probably the most interesting arrival in Wellington for some months past, the French steamer #Antinous, drew alongside the Queen’s Wharf this morning from Dunkirk, via way ports.… though she now is engaged in peaceful trading between France and New Zealand, her mission in wartime was to harry vessels leaving this country for the scene of hostilities on the other side of the world. Not only did she sink many vessels by gunfire and internal explosion, but the mines she laid in the Pacific and Australasian waters wrought havoc far and wide, and her name came to be feared throughout this portion of the southern hemisphere. For the Antinous was formerly the Wolf, which one day was reported to be within sight of Wellington.… Sight-seers in plenty looked over the vessel to-day, and it is anticipated that many more will seize the opportunity of seeing the ship to which so much wartime history attaches.

_The Evening Post_, 10 June 1924:
PERSONAL MATTERS
A gathering of citizens and returned soldiers took place at the R.S.A. rooms last evening, to bid farewell to Padre #Winton, who is shortly leaving New Zealand for Australia. Colonel Hall referred to Padre Winton’s work amongst the “Diggers” during the war. The Padre was, he said, a man who did his duty unflinchingly, and helped to make the lives of the soldiers more amenable. Colonel Hall wished Padre Winton every advancement in his sphere of life and work. Among others who paid tributes to the popularity and war services of Padre Winton was Sir John Luke, M.P., who said that the work performed by the Padre in looking after the welfare of our soldiers entitled him to the respect of the people of New Zealand. Padre Winton, who feelingly responded, was accorded three hearty cheers, and good wishes were expressed for his future happiness, and continued success in his work.
