Käki kukkuu mäellä. Cuckoo calling on the hill.
Muutama päivä sitten olin erityisen onnekas: käki istahti kelomäntyyn korkealla mäellä, jolla kuvalin perhosia, ja alkoi kukkumaan. Vain koiraat kukkuvat. Puiden suojassa lähestyin varovasti lintua ja sain videoitua ensimmäistä kertaa käen kukuntaa: https://youtu.be/WC-RQrq71Cs?si=ESmnbWjN3HtUDGMA

A few days ago I was extremely lucky: a cuckoo landed on a dead pine tree on a high hill where I was photographing butterflies, and started calling. Only males make the “cuck-koo” calls. Under the cover of the trees, I approached the bird carefully and was able to take video of cuckoo's calling for the first time: https://youtu.be/WC-RQrq71Cs?si=ESmnbWjN3HtUDGMA
I also learned something new: the aftersound ("coo") comes from the lower breast (not from bill).

Lehtopöllö keväisessä ilta-auringossa. A tawny owl in a sunlight of the spring evening.
Lehtopöllöjä näkee harvoin, kun ne ovat hämärä- ja yöaktiivinen laji, mutta opin pari vuotta sitten, että niillä on mieluisia päivälepopaikkoja. Tammien onkaloissa ne voivat levätä suojassa ja illan tullen tarkastella ympäristöä ja ruveta saalistamaan (jyrsijöitä, lintuja tai vaikka sammakoita). Niillä on hyvä suojaväri, kuten monilla linnuilla (kuva 2).

Tawny owls are rarely seen as they are a twilight and nocturnal species, but I learned a couple of years ago that they have favorite daytime resting trees. They can rest in the hollows of shelter in the oaks, and when nightfalls they survey the surroundings and start hunting (rodents, birds or even frogs). They have good camouflage, like many birds (image 2).

Ihania pieniä kultaisia palleroita on munista syntynyt! Pikkuisista pidetään hyvää huolta: molemmat emot ruokkivat ja hakevat kaikenlaista syötävää kosteikon niityltä (öttiäisiä, matoja sun muuta poikasille sopivaa). Töyhtöhyyppien hyökkäykset, joilla lienee omat poikaset lähistöllä ja jotka saattavat joutua kurkien ateriaksi, saavat kurjet valppaiksi: poikasten suojelu on kaikille linnuille etusijalla.

Lovely little golden chicks have been born from eggs! They are well taken care of both parents feeding all kinds of food from the wetland meadow (insects, worms and such suitable for young ones). Attacks by lapwings, which probably have their own chicks nearby and which may become a meal for the cranes, make cranes alert: protecting chicks is a priority for all birds.
