Seeking recommendations for a #WebMapping tutorial / course?

Slightly at sea on where to start.

- My current JS skill level is _extreme novice_.
- I don't have access to ArcGIS.
- Comfortable with #QGIS [*] and the #python #geospatial ecosystem (#geopandas #xarray #rasterio and plotting with #matplotlib)

Suggestions welcome. TIA. 👍

* I have looked at the qgis2web plugin, but having some issues associated with my aged laptop (2012 mbp running Ubuntu) and a 'Wayland session'.

I’m trying to digitally recreate a vintage style world map with two hemispheres (Old World and New World) and two polar regions and where the world is as it is known by Europeans in 1700. (So Abel Tasman had already seen the western coast of New Zealand and the southern tip of Tasmania.)

Next, I’ll add labels, but anachronistically using current names. (Nope, never “Gulf of America”.)

Data source: #NaturalEarth; rendering: HTML/SVG + #D3js

#30DayMapChallenge 🗺️ Day 2️⃣8️⃣: The blue planet

Belated entry and catching up coz I needed a break! 😅

Anyway, I figured doing a variant of my North American lakes map from 2023 but for the #Philippines 🇵🇭 would be perfect for this day’s theme: en.osm.town/@seav/111382405567

Sources and tools: Map data from #OpenStreetMap; top ten lakes from #Wikipedia; rendering via #D3js using an azimuthal equal-area projection for each of the lakes.

I’m not sure if #Wikidata is complete or accurate but looking at the map, and not being a WW1 expert, I’m actually surprised that there’s very little activity inside #Germany. The Western Front is quite obvious, and southern #Finland is quite active. The Middle East is also seeing a lot of action.

I again used my Day 13 new tool #D3js to render an Albers equal-area map of #Europe with standard parallels at 35°N and 65°N.

You can use reactive widgets to speed up your interactive visualization application development, while also facilitating re-usability.

It is also very useful for coordinating views, even if they are written using different libraries. Here's is a simple example synchronizing #vega-lite & #d3js

#30DayMapChallenge 🗺️ Day 1️⃣4️⃣: A world map

Normally I would render a world map in my favorite Cahill–Concialdi projection, but I figured, why not continue to use Day 13’s new tool #D3js and render a world map in a vintage two-hemisphere #stereographic projection? (Yeah, this could also fit into Day 7’s theme.)

I am rather pleased with how this turned out. 😀

You can view the live D3-powered map here: 30dmc.sector4f.com/map/2024-11

Base map is from #NaturalEarth’s 1:50m Cultural Vectors.

One of the neat little charts on Hardcover is this Ratings Distribution that's on each book page (ex: hardcover.app/books/tomorrow-a ).

I previously tried to generate this using D3.js on the server side using JS DOM - which is what Hardcover uses right now.

In the conversion to Rails, I'm switching this to just use D3.js scales, then generate the SVG directly. It's sooo much smoother, and uses the good parts of D3.

This course used the same technique:

One thing LLMs are extremely good at is helping create complex #d3js graphs.

I mean, I wouldn’t ever trust them with actual data analysis, but autocompleting deranged JavaScript is certainly in their wheelhouse and this legit makes using D3 way easier.

Hi, sfba.social! Allow me to #introduction myself.

I just moved here from pdx.social. I can’t be summed up in a single toot, but… I love #design, #architecture, #photography, #redwoods, the #California coast, #neurodiversity, and #inclusive systems. Oh, and #parenting my three brilliantly unique kids (the hardest work I’ve ever done) and really bad puns.

My life’s work is building Oolie, our family business and Certified #BCorp helping families sleep better with #organic bedding and baby products. I hope you’ll check us out.

In my former career, I was into online learning, creative coding, and data visualization, even publishing a couple of books. I still love that stuff (#DataVis #Processing #p5js #d3js #JavaScript), but that feels like 1M years ago.

Expect to see posts about everything mentioned above!

Big thanks to the SFBA @moderators for having me.
