[#Pulsars, these #particles accelerators] When particles (electrons, protons, nuclei) enter their field, they are accelerated. Confined, they form a #gamma halo around these compact objects. Pulsars with gamma halo are windows, magnifying glasses, on the enigmatic #CosmicRayings.

Focus on the #GALAMO project led by IRAP astronomer Pierrick Martin: irap.omp.eu/en/2025/02/studyin. The target: pulsars with gamma halo.

“What if pulsars played an essential role in the evolution of #galaxies and the formation of #stars on a cosmic scale?” 🤔 😵🧐

deep dive into the financial engineering at work in Michael Saylor's not-technically-fraudulent "strategy" of borrowing billions of dollars to buy #Bitcoin via his company #Microstrategy.

And yes, if you're wondering, Microstrategy is the same company Saylor committed accounting fraud with while he was CEO of back in the dotcom bubble and in the process set a record for most money lost by anyone in a single day that stood for almost two decades IIRC

Our brains constantly work to make predictions about what’s going on around us to ensure that we can attend -- to and consider the unexpected, for instance.

A new study examines how this works during consciousness and also breaks down under general anesthesia.
⭐️The results add evidence to the idea that conscious thought requires synchronized communication
— mediated by brain rhythms in specific frequency bands
— between basic sensory and higher-order cognitive regions of the brain.

Previously, members of the research team in The Picower Institute for Learning and Memory at MIT and at Vanderbilt University had described how ❇️brain rhythms enable the brain to remain prepared to attend to surprises.

Cognition-oriented brain regions (generally at the front of the brain) use relatively 🔸low-frequency #alpha and #beta rhythms to suppress processing by sensory regions (generally toward the back of the brain) of stimuli that have become familiar and mundane in the environment (e.g., your co-worker’s music).
When sensory regions detect a surprise (e.g., the office fire alarm), they use 🔸faster-frequency #gamma rhythms to tell the higher regions about it -- and the higher regions process that at gamma frequencies to decide what to do (e.g., exit the building).

The new results, published Oct. 7 in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, show that when animals were under propofol-induced general anesthesia,
a sensory region retained the capacity to detect simple surprises
but communication with a higher cognitive region toward the front of the brain was lost,
making that region unable to engage in its “top-down” regulation of the activity of the sensory region and keeping it oblivious to simple and more complex surprises alike.

「Huge uplift for Eastern Cape on way from South Africa’s R105bn green ammonia project

The building of the R105-billion #greenammonia project by Hive Hydrogen South Africa is poised to be a huge economic uplift for the #EasternCape.

The large project is the first phase of a multi-phase venture that will be constructed over 16 years. [...]

The front-end engineering design (FEED) process gets underway next month and tenders will invited shortly after the conclusion of that process in July.

Funding will be a combination of 70% debt and 30% equity. The final investment decision, which is expected by the end of next year, will be followed by construction and commissioning in 2028.

[...]

The building by Hive Hydrogen of 3.6 GW renewable energy capacity is scheduled to begin in early 2025. The solar power component will be built near the town of #DeAar, in the #NorthernCape, and wind component north and south of #BeaufortWest, in the #WesternCape.

A large transmission grid strengthening programme will enable #HiveHydrogen’s 3.6 GW on to the grid and phases two, three and four of the project will each require additional renewable energy of a similar gigawattage. Interestingly, Hive Hydrogen’s initial 3.6 GW on to the grid will enable an additional 14.4 GW from other independent power producers.

The one-million tons of green ammonia a year that the #Coega project will produce will provide clean energy for a variety of applications, with green hydrogen and ammonia being particularly well suited to the decarbonisation of heavy industries and transportation industries.

[...]

Those in the industry will know that one of the most important things that #Eskom is doing and plans to be operational by around 2029, is to put in two 765 kV transmission lines with about 10 GW of capacity, from #Gamma in the Northern Cape to #Grassridge in the Eastern Cape.

[...]

When will 20 000 people be employed by the project [...]

There will be a large number of construction #jobs and because this is a multi-phase project, we're hoping to time the construction jobs so that we have a full 16-year period over which we can employ the people, so that it's not a construction job just for a short period.」

I tested salt alternative with my #RadiaCode 102 #gamma ray spectrometer. While it showed 60cpm more than the 140cpm background level, the K-40 1.46MeV line (experienced in 10% of its decays via electron capture to Ar-40) was not significant. Possibly, background levels of other ingredients in the salt substitute had a higher level of common uranium/thorium decay products. The Radiacode may not be sensitive enough for a definitive answer. #radiation #physics #science #hobby

My gamma spectrometer arrived yesterday. Unsurprisingly but thrilling, the smoke detector has Americium-241, which falls off to background levels (160 CPM) a half a meter away. Nothing else has shown gamma activity. I have some small element samples on order that should be interesting. I am curious whether it's worth it looking for thrift shop finds (uranium ceramics, radium watches) or if they are all routinely screened these days. #science #radioactivity #gamma #americium #uranium #RadiaCode

Scientists have discovered the highest-energy light ever detected from the sun, using the High Altitude Water Cherenkov (HAWC) observatory in Mexico. The light, known as gamma rays, was emitted during a powerful solar flare in 2017. The discovery could help us understand the mysterious mechanisms that accelerate particles in the sun and other cosmic sources. #sun #gamma #HAWC
