This was a big year for me for #TTRPG, just started playing and running a *lot* more new things, after spending years just playing/running #DnD5e.
Systems I ran for the first time this year:
#Stargate RPG
#Genesys
#Mothership
#SavageWorlds
#Vaesen
#DeltaGreen (never played)
#StarTrekAdventures (only played afterwards)
#CypherSystem
As I've said before, I finally bit the bullet and starting running games I'd never played or only played once or twice, and it worked pretty well!
2024 might not be as adventurous, since once I've found things I like, esp. #Vaesen, I tend to stick with them, but I've still got a couple more games I want to try:
#CohorsCthulhu
Maybe #AchtungCthulhu too
#CandelaObscura
#NinefoxGambit
Oh, and #Daggerheart when it comes out
All of these, I would be running without ever playing them, since I haven't found anyone else running them.
So, the adventure continues!
I'll be leaving #Mothership next year.
It's a great little system, I had a lot of fun with one-shots in 2023.
But…
1. I'm even in a Mothership campaign, and the rules are too bare-bones to support it, though it tries. You're supposed to avoid rolling! So it often feels like you're not playing an RPG at all.
2. I'm less interested in "jobs”-based RPGs, more in “mission"-based RPGs. It's a different mindset. More solving the mystery and helping people, less stealing shit (#AndrewsTTRPGRules).
I can check #CohorsCthulhu off the list!
Ran the introductory game once in full, and another session of it with different people that's going to have its concluding session (I hope to god) next week.
Can't do any more with it than that, because it's not fully published yet!
Lol "might not be as adventurous”!
I've run 14 new game systems this year!
I'd call that pretty adventurous!
Admittedly, it's November now (of 2024), and the holidays aren't a good time to run too much more, but I'm happy with my track record this year.
15 as of yesterday!
And it will be 16 by the end of next week!
But that's probably it for this year.
@apontious I feel the same. Switching from one-shots to campaigns has been hard for my tables too. I’m now angling for smaller length campaigns, with potential “sequels.”
Solve (vs save or survive) feels like the only way campaigns can work. Reveal the mystery, because your characters will probably die.
@apontious wow. I interesting. What did you think about the Stargate game and the Genesys system?
@unordinarytales 1. Stargate:
Built on D&D SRD and suffers for it. And their additions aren't super-well thought-out, it feels like to me. But it's perfectly serviceable!
Alas, Amazon buying MGM pretty much killed it, and the online community is tiny, with bad actors. No future.
2. Genesys:
Weird dice! Decent system. Suffers from the one-size-fits all approach of systems like Cypher, which I'm moving away from, myself.
Online community also small and pretty inactive.
@apontious Hmm. Interesting. I recently got the everyday heroes humble bundle and at first glance that seems like an interesting option for modern day D20 based games (seems like a 5e reimagining of d20 modern).
@apontious I tried the Cypher system myself; I bounced off the Gm instrusion mechanic. It seems like the better the system aligns with the world the smoother the game. I think though 5e is becoming a platform more so then anything so we will see more options for customization for the rules to meet the setting.
