Just curious: What do you consider the first #capitalist society?

Generally, folks seem to think of the 19th century. Roughly when #Industrialisation moved the power to exploit people from "power by noble birth" (#Feudalism) to "power by capital ownership" (#Capitalism) on a large scale. With a lot of overlap, of course.

Yet some Marxists as well as "Capitalism= #PrivateProperty" folks argue an earlier beginning of capitalism.

Corporatism does not care about humanity.

With Warner Bros. deciding not to renew its distribution deal with Sesame Workshop, it seems Big Bird’s days are numbered. Here, writer Ira Wells explains how Sesame Street’s fate is symptomatic of a larger issue: the deprioritization of the public.

"Industry-Backed Legislation Would Bar the Use of Science Behind Hundreds of Environmental Protections"

"Most people don’t know IRIS, as the program is called, but it is the scientific engine of the agency that protects human health and the environment. Its scientists assess the toxicity of chemicals, estimating the amount of each that triggers cancer and other health effects. And these values serve as the independent, nonpartisan basis for the rules, regulations and permits that limit our exposure to toxic chemicals."

"Robin Jaspert: Credit Suisse is currently under renewed investigation for systemically laundering money for the Nazis during the Third Reich and for covering up traces of that until today. Is anyone else in the same boat?

Zachary Gallant: The only thing that makes Credit Suisse special is how hard it tried to cover up its guilt. In general, you can be a Nazi collaborator and a Nazi profiteer and live a happy, powerful, profitable life thereafter. So can your children, and so can all of the managers of your company.

It feels like this is a lot of manufactured fury about Credit Suisse, when in fact it’s so deeply systemic that most people have not thought it worth the cover up. You just have to shut up and move on — you won’t be bothered. And even if, someday, you will be bothered, you’ll commission a historian, paid with money from your company or family or foundation, and you’ll release their findings together, and you’ll do a big celebration of how you’ve overcome your past. Then you can move on again like nothing happened.

Robin Jaspert: Can you give an example?

Zachary Gallant: I would have a difficult time picking an example, as you have the Aufarbeitung (“reprocessing”) work of really almost any German company to choose from. Professors are paid to go into the archives, and then they release a book at a press conference together with the leaders of the company and talk about how this historical responsibility is so important. It’s all tears and balloons: “Look at us. We’re so great. We did it.” We could be talking about nearly any company in the German automobile industry or really any chemical or steel company. Just about all the biggest companies in Germany have followed this pattern, without ever having to do the work that Credit Suisse put in for a cover-up."

1) Okay, the oligarchs (AKA ruling class) and their media brainwashed the US electorate into voting for a narcissist with a 70 IQ to be POTUS. Again! The moron wants war with Canada, Greenland, Panama, and clearly anyone who isn’t part of the ruling class, as he slashes safety nets, creates new enemy states, and tariffs the US consumer into debt rivaling US medical debt.

My guess is that #BuuNygren found an investor in Herr Trump! "Oh, you'll invest in our casino-resort? We won't oppose uranium transport and whatever else you want to do."

You seem to have made up your mind about that. That’s ok but I beg to disagree (I don’t want to fight over it though). IMO, capitalism is about ‘owning the means of production’ and by definition also means an individual ‘owns the fruit of his labor’ (ie. capital). Hence blaming ‘capitalism’ for all ills in modern society is not constructive nor accurate. This is why we need other terms to describe the particular ‘parts’ and ‘implementations’ of capitalism in order for capital to serve society and not the othr way around.

I am happy to discuss these but will not respond to denialism or ideological bias. A reasoned argument will get my attention though.

"In their usual cheerleading role for corporate interests, our media tends to treat any declines in the NZD as being great news for our exporters. Yet it is a disaster for ordinary people in a small island nation made reliant on imports by decades of neo-liberal 'efficiencies'. We will all be paying more and more for imported goods, including at the petrol pump."

This is #Corporatism writ large. Unwanted detractors are kept out of the decision making process. Crickey owner, a shareholder, was barred from the shareholders meeting while other sympathetic journos (non-shareholders) were invited in. This is the dark side of Australia and an indication of the power these corporations exert on the markets. Deregulated markets and neolberalism is what got us here. It's up to us to roll this back with better regulations via the ballot box on #May25
