Parkes! Halfway point & crew change for the Outback Xplorer.

I took this #rail photo when I was driving back from my trip to #Parkes last month. There was this long, beautiful stretch of rail with no trains – after all, NSW has destroyed most of the regional passenger train options and it's just freight. So I stopped at one spot where there was plenty of visibility in every direction and grabbed this photo. Kind of appropriate, given dad was a train driver and that trip was my first visit since he'd passed away.

There is something truly pleasurable in seeing rails just stretching off into the distance.

That was possibly my last visit to #Parkes for a very long time. Mum will be moving to Coffs Harbour later this year. So it was a bit of a farewell visit as well as a visit for her birthday. I had wondered whether I'd have particular emotions saying goodbye to it but there was ... nothing.

It hit 36º or 37º degrees today in #Parkes and tomorrow it'll be 39º or 40º. Save me.

Had to visit the dish today. This is what made me a nerd. #Parkes #ParkesRadioTelescope.

This could very well be my last visit to #Parkes. With dad gone, mum's looking at moving in with my brother and sister-in-law in Coffs Harbour. While I've got other family in Parkes, I really don't stay in touch, so the chances of me coming back is pretty low. So this is like a farewell visit to what was my home town.

A bit windswept in #Parkes today.

Start of a few days off. Going out to #Parkes to visit mum for her birthday. It'll be the first time I've seen her since dad died at the end of December. First stop tomorrow, #WaggaWagga. Will be nice to be on the road for a bit.

My uncle was interviewed recently for the #Parkes #Elvis festival. (Yes, I'm not proud of my home town for that one.)

At the end of the interview the journalist asked him if he could spell his name. "Yes", he replied seriously, "I can spell my name", then shook her hand and said thanks for the interview.

I made an #introduction a couple of weeks ago, but there are more people around now, so here's an introduction to my #research.
I have mainly worked on #RadioAstronomy surveys of neutral hydrogen in the local universe. In my early career, I was part of the HIPASS survey with the #Parkes telescope and the HIJASS survey with the #Lovell telescope at #JodrellBank, and did my #PhD on the HIDEEP survey, also with Parkes. I later led the AGES and WAVES surveys with #Arecibo.
