Great summary of the Country[side] code in this Penguin guide to Mountaineering (Alan Blackshaw, 1965)
Cracking walk yesterday above Braemore Junction to the Corbett of Beinn Enaiglair.
Quite boggy, but lovely stalkers paths, and despite a hazy day the views were fantastic.
Excellent day yesterday hillwalking in Assynt: we did the Quinag loop over four peaks. Being a scaredy-cat, I nearly gave up on some of the steepest sections, but very glad we kept going!
Edited to add a fourth photo.

Today was a bit of a weird one weather-wise. We left Glasgow in sunshine this morning to climb a couple of munros on the Ben Lawers range. By the time we were coming back down, it was snowing. As we drove back to Glasgow, the sun returned, and then by nightfall it was raining. Welcome to Spring in Scotland.
Continuing to share favourite images from my 30+ year photographic career, this is Bernie Carter and Drew Moore on the South Ridge of Little Stand in the Lake District—a route I worked out while working on ‘Scrambles and Easy Climbs in the Lake District’. One of the best days out in the book

Ben Lawers from Meall Corranaich on a beautiful day in the Scottish mountains spent avoiding the news and knocking another couple of munros off the list.

“Most works of mountaineering literature have been written by men, and most male mountaineers are focused on the summit… But to aim for the highest point is not the only way to climb a mountain, nor is a narrative of siege and assault the only way to write about one.”

Contemplating Cape Wrath: The Cape Wrath Trail has been on my ‘One Day’ list for around a decade now. Originally thinking of a self-supported run, but that isn’t going to happen; my distance running days are long over. Also, as the years pass, I am increasingly interested in being in a place, even of a place, rather than simply passing through a place; speed has lost its appeal. ... #hillwalking, #cwt: https://aye.tf/2025/03/19/cwt
Is anyone here a member of the British Mountaineering Council or Mountaineering Scotland?
I'm considering joining but can't work out if Personal Accident Insurance is a benefit of membership. I know Public Liability insurance is, but Personal Accident cover is buried deep in the provider's document portal and I'm getting muddled.
Can anyone clarify, please?
Another photo from my trip out of Glasgow last weekend, this time from the slopes of Ben Lawers. Scottish mountains in the spring sunshine are really up there with almost anywhere in the world, and you can reach the closest of them within an hour's drive from the city.
If you enjoy spending time in the great outdoors, both in Scotland and elsewhere, it's to these trailblazers that you owe a debt of gratitude for helping to ensure you still have the right to do so.
It was the birth place of not one, but two of Scotland's early mountaineering clubs (the Lomond and the Creagh Dhu). Amongst others Tom Weir, later to become an influential writer and broadcaster, was a regular visitor to the fire where those passing would stop to make a brew and talk with others doing the same.
