What if we could get cane toads to destroy themselves? Find out how… ausgeo.co/peterpantadpoles

Researchers from Macquarie University have discovered that cane toad tadpoles are "enthusiastic cannibals" of cane toad eggs, and can wipe out entire clutches in waterbodies where they're released.

But what about when these tadpoles turn into toads and start breeding? Well, there is a solution for that too – and it is inspired by Peter Pan.

Saltwater crocodiles are often spotted lying in the sun, but Australian researchers have discovered it’s just as vital for these reptiles to remain cool.

So, why do crocodiles need to regulate their body temperature? And what does this teach us about these iconic Aussie predators?

So, how did they accomplish it? And what natural attribute was the inspiration?

Have you ever seen a mallee emu-wren (Stipiturus mallee)? This sweet little bird is a Triodia spinifex specialist, using the spiky, tussock-forming grass as shelter from predators and a safe site to nest and forage!

The mallee emu-wren was once found across mallee shrublands and heathlands, east and west of the SA–Victoria border, but land-clearing, bushfires and droughts have removed its habitat from much of its former range.

Believe it or not, Australia's oceans aren't filled with dangerous and ferocious sharks! 🦈

Zebra sharks (Stegostoma tigrinum) are considered harmless because they are sluggish, slow-swimming, and feed primarily on molluscs.

In Australia’s mangrove-lined mudflats and estuaries live armour-plated mud-dwellers with massive bone-crunching claws – giant mud crabs (Scylla serrata)! 🦀

Once thought to be a small-ranging inshore inhabitant, recent tracking has found egg-bearing females venturing 100km or more from their estuaries, while prawn trawlers have hauled them up in nets more than 50km offshore.

So, why are these crabs travelling so far from home? See what scientists speculate… ausgeo.co/mudcrabs
