After 12 years' worth plus a spate of requests this past weekend, I'm doing the unthinkable and/or unconscionable and writing up an Apocalypse World SRD.
It's going incredibly well. I can't even tell you. It's a mean, stripped down version of my PbtA articles, laser focused on making a cinematic ensemble action-drama-thriller game like AW.
I don't know how many games it'll inspire, of course, when it comes to it, but it's a tight piece of practical RPG theory anyway. I'm excited to share it.
@lumpley these are words I never thought I would read.
Strange days my friend.
@thebrand I never thought I'd write them! But sometime Saturday night the insight came that unlocked them, and away we go.
@lumpley can't fight the muse.
I am a bit interested to see what comes out of it, I will confess.
@lumpley Exciting! I'm looking forward to seeing it
Vegas betting has opened with news of the upcoming AW SRD.
I'm taking a parlay, which means within the first week of the SRD being published someone from within the RPG industry has to say that the AW SRD isn't an SRD and someone from within the indie RPG scene has to say that it misses the point of PBTA gaming.
I am betting my house on these things being true.
Safe money.
@Judd So what I want to know is whether 1st Quest will get published in some form some day.
I paid for some beautiful art and that artist now works for Marvel.
But no, I am not sure it ever will.
But who knows? Never say never.
@lumpley It's so exciting that you're making this, and I also love to hear that you're having such a good time doing it! :D It will be really exciting to see when it's done!
@lumpley That sounds amazing! Very much looking forward to seeing it!
@lumpley Will you be releasing it under a license? I mean, honesty, I still take your word for it that you won't like sue as long as both creators (you and Meguey) are credited. I'm just curious.
@Covok Yep. Some kind of CC, no doubt.
No final decision yet! But I'd expect By, yeah.
@lumpley I am intensely excited for this.
@lumpley
Can't wait!
It's an innovative system. Seems an SRD could be seen as a public service, for really creative people to design within. It's also good business to encourage people to try it your cool way, and then put out great content that does it that way.
@lumpley How many more games do you want to inspire, man! It's gotta be one of the most influential games ever! (This sounds very cool. Good luck!)
@lumpley this is amazing news! If you want to add it to the Fari Games repository, I would gladly help you integrate it to have a searchable and indexed web version!!
@RPDeshaies Yes! I'll forget without your help. Don't let me forget.
@lumpley duly noted!
@lumpley I offer to translate it into Spanish for free when you finish it. Your message must break the language barrier. Contact me here, it will be a pleasure!
@lumpley I just spent 5 or 6 hours googling the internet for exactly that! Thank You.
@lumpley Really excited to see what you put in it. I still remember organizing that panel on AW/PBTA design at PaxU and most of the people in the room being unfamiliar with it. Maybe the SRD will help enable folks to have deeper discussions about AW-informed PBTA design?
Has to use 2d6.
Always has three result bands.
Has to have playbooks.
Seems pretty complete.
*WINK*
@kpetker Hey no spoilers!
@lumpley OOPS!
That's what you get for hiding it all in plain sight!
@lumpley I ain't gonna lie, I think it's about time. You and @megueyb are such nice people, are very gracious about sharing what you've created, and have been enormous influences on the #TTRPG hobby. I almost feel like occasionally it's been taken advantage of or taken for granted. Just having an SRD with even a CC license I think it's a huge step in a good direction.
Thanks for saying so!
@lumpley I do think this is very good news :D
Next, we need to have the same for the major fork (FitD) – so I can use the same terminology as the original branch and their fork in my very minor fork.
I understand that this is very engineering-heavy thinking when it comes to reference documents... but I also do think that we should use the same terms in all move-based games.
:D
I don't even think that we should use the same terms in all of MY OWN move-based games!
So, you want to rename a *move* to something else?
More seriously: I don't mean that there needs to be a formal and correct book of terms. But I do think aligning on some terminology will help people learn new games.
And to spell out obvious things due to internet: sometimes a more thematic terminology is in place, and the original terms should just be ignored.
@lumpley Awesome! I can't believe this is happening. Thank you
@lumpley this is great! I've been working on a Foundry AW option, and this could make it doable. Awesome!
@lumpley If I may ask, what license will you use?
We haven't made a final decision yet but probably CC-By.
@lumpley amazing idea
@lumpley I am so freaking excited to see what comes of this. Right as I start really digging into PbtA, too. Even before the OGL fiasco.
@lumpley Sweet! I hope it goes smoothly.
@lumpley will the SRD itself be written in PbtA markup? “When you think about your setting, choose any from the following, but no more than five.”
@matt oh god
@lumpley I still want to do a PbtA game in the style of Storming the Wizard’s Toe. Will that be covered in the new thingy?
I'm not sure. My guess is: almost. I guess we'll have to wait and see?
@lumpley
Love it! For me reading and writing Creator Kits / SRDs is more fun because my brain likes looking at possibilities.
Looking forward to it!
